General Cycling Discussion - Does your bike have a name?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I suspect it has but as yet it hasn't seen fit to communicate it to me.
I'll keep you posted.

They all have names. They're down at the bottom of the page.
Roadie, MTB, and commuter.
Nope. Neither of them. Never felt the need to name something that wouldn't come when I call it.
And yes, my cat does come when I call it. Although I generally have to add the word "food".

My bike has a socially unacceptable name that would cause a great uproar within the community of cyclists most likely causing me to be banned...............:notamused:

The Winnebago, it weighs 31lbs with 2 full water bottles.
No. I don't name inanimate possessions. I'm not saying others shouldn't, just that I don't see the point myself.

My first bike was a comfort bike, named Bullwinkle. My 7.5 is Rocky and my 2.1 is Johnny 5. My wife called her comfort bike Stella, her 7.3 Louisville. Her current 7.5 is Red, road bike is just Ruby (Specialized Ruby) and her mountain bike Excalibur (X-Cal). Bullwinkle, Stella and Louisville have moved on.

I generally don't name things. I suppose whenever I make a polo bike that actually fits me I might be tempted to name it, though I haven't even decided what frame I'll be using yet. If I actually do name it, then I suppose it wouldn't be unlikely for my Trek, Centurion, and GT to get names also.

I never attach names to inanimate objects...sorry to say, bikes ARE inanimate objects . I do not wish to start a flame war (and I don't know why this subject always does) but, attaching human characteristics or traits to a machine (ie: names, or souls....anthropomorphism...) is IMHO anyway, stupid. I know folks will disagree and, to each his or her own, but I do not subscribe to such silliness.

Mine are all named according to their color.
Currently in the lineup:
Blue Thunder - Pinarello
Grey Goose - Mongoose
Black Beauty - KHS
Black Baron - Baron Triton
Green Lantern - Trek
Blue Bomber - Western Flyer
Then there's one I haven't figured out what color it will wind up. It's got some factory orange on it but it's been repainted with a metallic magenta. Will likely strip and repaint again in red and then it will be dubbed:
Red Rocker!

I've never felt the need to name any of my possessions (other than my stuffed animals when I was little). Back when I used to own cars, my mom thought I was weird for not naming them. I guess I just don't get as attached as my wife who has named all of her vehicles.

Naming inanimate objects is a long-standing tradition.
From the beginning of time mariners all over the world have named their ships.
WW1 and WW2 pilots named their planes - usually after a wife they left back home or a girl they knew.
The astrounats in the Mercury Program used to name their capsules, until the Liberty Bell sank upon re-entry and then the practice was banned (to be revived during the Apollo and Space Station program).
In many parts of the world people name all sorts of inanimate objects, including cars, carts, locomotives, etc.
It is a long-established human practice to give names to those objects to which we become attached. It is an endearing part of our nature to want to endow the objects that we use in daily life with human-like characteristics, including a name.

Yeah, I'll let you tell that to BB King and Lucille.
Recently bought a vintage Cannondale. The color scheme was purple with yellow and green accents. My wife gave it the name Priscilla since it looked like a drag queen. Once I changed bar tape and cages, it got shortened to "Pris". The funny thing is that as I was looking up name meanings for another bike, I came upon Priscilla which means ancient. Perfect for a 25yo bike.
My single speed CX bike was named Ban-Shi. It's a Japanese name in deference to my wife and means 10,000 Deaths. I was going to name it Ban-Shou which means 10,000 Wins as a means of encouragement, but after the first ride in my hilly area, 10,000 Deaths seemed so much more appropriate. Unfortunately she didn't even make it that long, but I may be able to resurrect her.

Tell the men who flew missions during WW2 on these planes that they were “stupid” or "pathetic" for naming inanimate objects. :notamused:

I think it's pathetic to make judgements about other people over something so unimportant.
I put a sitcker of Fat Pony on my beater, and since it is kind of slow and heavy I call it that sometimes. When explaining to my friend why I need two bikes, I told him "My new bike is like the hot secretary. My old one is fun and dependable and I just plain love it, so that one's my wifey." I fully admit I say stuff like this to get a rise out of him (I won't be able to tell you what his reply was) but it has got me mentally referring to my new bike The Secretary. Yes, I have seen the movie and I don't care.
I think I'm going to name my new drill set Drilly. I check with science and studies have shown that by naming my drill set just now, I am not any more pathetic. In fact, over all mass of Awesome is up by 10%.

Don't forget a plane that I believe played some sort of important role in the war. I believe it was named Enola Gay and it's passenger also had a name, Little Boy.
I still don't name my possessions as it just feels a bit silly to me. If you want to, though, go for it. My wife has named all of her cars and then cried when we sold them at various times. Me not so much. Maybe I'm a robot and all dead inside.

I don't think you are. The biggest difference between you and some of the other posters in this thread is that you recognize that different people do things differently. You, however, do not not resort to name calling such as the posters who use terms like "stupid" or "pathetic."
That my friend makes you quite different and definitely not dead inside...at leat not in my book. :)
BTW, my wife refuses to name objects; she does not cry whenever we sell an old car...in fact, she does a little dance every time we sell an old car. It means that she was getting a new one!
