So I got an old Murray for $5, but the frame doesn't fit as well as my old Huffy (and I noticed some frame damage that makes me nervous after I brought it home). I bought it because all the parts appear pretty much identical and I was going to use it as a donor cycle for my winter riding. After 2 years of salt and neglect, the components are screaming.

The replacement has a triple on the front instead of a double, but everything appears to be the same component wise.

I found Park Tool's page (http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/one-piece-bottom-bracket-service) on how to do this, but I'm only going to do this once (or maybe twice if I find a new donor), so I don't want to buy a bunch of tools for this.

Is there a good way to do this with some improvised tools?

When I was a kid, I'd use a large adjustable wrench, groove joint pliers, screwdriver and hammer (dad wasn't too thrilled that the screwdriver and hammer were used together).

Try the guide here www.atomiczombie.com for some slightly 'low tech' methods. The only real thing to remember is that the threads on the left side are left-hand (reversed) threads, so you'll need to turn parts clockwise to loosen.

Monster Pet, thanks for the page.. I think I'm going to try those brute force methods.

My current BB is badly rusted from the salt. Would some of the liquid wrench on it before I start be a good idea, or is there something better to use?

I prefer PB Blaster but doubt there is a huge difference between the two.
