Classic & Vintage - I've got a dumb peddle question...

JUST took my (work in progress) GP out for it's first test drive. MY first bike ride in decades, FWIW.

Next was to perform some clean-up and lube on the peddles but...

Are these damn peddles suppose to roll / rest top side down, and require me to toe flip them up to their grated top side once underway? :mad: Seems like a crappy design, or I'm totally out to lunch! :lol:

Short answer, yes! They are designed to have toe clips installed. To get your feet into the toe clips, you use your toes to flip them right side up and get your shoes in the loops.

You probably want something that is commonly called a rat-trap pedal, or touring pedal. MKS makes nice touring pedals and they sell for about 25 dollars. There are lots of old cheap ones to be found as well.

OP, your pedals do have a top and a bottom. You'll notice the lip or "quill" on the outside of the pedal acts to keep your foot positioned on the pedal. I much prefer them with cages, but they can be used without them fine; you'll get used to flipping them.

You are better off with touring pedals.
Those dainty road pedals with the little upturned decorative twirl on the end were just not designed for American feet. The points dig right into the sole of my cycling/construction boots.

I remove the front reflector for easier use. (Once lubed) they will sit vertical.

I just did that and at least now the grated surface is toward the front of the bike for much easier foot planting.

That will certainly suffice until I go with the "rat-trap" design maybe down the road.

:thumb: They live in Goose Creek, but I think he is in A-school somewhere in closer to Charleston.

Your pedals seem to not have the usual "spike" on the back plate of the pedal that will also help you flip/guide the pedals into position with the tips of your shoes so you can insert your shoe into the clips quickly. Most quill pedals like the ones posted, have them alreay integrated into the pedal cage, but you can also get them as separate add-ons if you want to. I highly recommend that you do.
