Well, if you're restoring a Rene Herse bike, I guess that's what you need. He made (or had made) a lot of his components.

Beautiful, but I'd hate to have to replace one of those chainrings.

I think that is the second or third generation, the early ones had individual C sections on the arm that mated to the chainring that had a half round region about the bolt, must have been a bear to machine, in the pre CNC machining center days.

Seems they are being made again, and will be available this fall.

The Herse crank is way cool, no doubt about it. I can totally see the original selling for a bunch of money, all you need would be two motivated buyers who need that crank to finish their rare build. How many times do one of these original cranks come up for sale in good condition anyway?

I am pretty excited by the re-introduction of the Herse crank by Compass Bicycles this fall, but I bet that it sells in the neighborhood of $400, which is too much money for me. We'll see what the price is when it comes to market though. Still, I like the way the crank only has one BCD, even for a triple, and of course the whole thing looks great. I wonder what replacement chainrings will cost?

Looks like jan posted an update on the modern-day version of this crankset with prices.

Can you imagine making something like that by hand? Not to mention his super cool stems and other unique components A toast to Mr. Herse.

I don't know, but if I my bank account was measured in 8 figures in credit (instead of 4 in debet...) I would'nt care about the money.

The reproduction isn't too far off money-wise from modern cranks like White Industries (which is also a cool crank) or the like. I kind of like my suginos and nervars though. I might build a bike around a crank like that though, I think it is very neat looking.

The New René Herse is a fair price, IMHO. If the Velo-Orange 50.4 was made with the same care and attention as the Compass Bicycle offering, it would also cost $400. That's just how much well made stuff costs.

21 guys wanted it, one had $2,650.00 to spare. My (flippin') goodness. Rene Herses are very pretty and desirable to me. Think we've been priced out of the market.

Those new RH cranks are not anodized, what a relief. We'll be getting to sand and polish them from day one on. Haha. Wonder if the price is for any desired combination of chainrings, and what extra rings will cost.
