Classic & Vintage - Double metric century - C&V style - (photo heavy)

Today was the annual metric century ride here in our county. Drillium Dude was able to make it over for the ride for his first shot at it (double metric century = 2 C&V bikes). Several other BF'ers wanted to ride but scheduling prevented them from doing so. Saw quite a few C&V bikes and really enjoyed the ride even with the almost 30 miles of 20+mph headwinds on the way out. But, that also made for a great ride back to town. DD is on his way home and I'm sure will post some photos later. Hopefully, we'll get his name in the local paper for one of the small towns we went through as the reporter was quite impressed that the Mondia of DD's was 40 years old and was asking all kinds of questions.

I missed you guys by about half an hour today, to many last minute tinkerings I had to do on the bike. Was a fun ride for sure though, a few of those hills I didn't remember when I was visualizing the course last night, loved the section leading up to the elk heights rest stop. And you were spot on about that last Hungary Junction hill. Normally I dig it but at mile 58 that thing was death. I'll also note that heading back from Cle Elum seemed to take about half the time as on the way up.

Great ride, I don't look forward to doing it next year yet, but I will in a few days when my legs recupe :)

I drove from Whidbey Island for this great event Friday morning and met up with Scott at Perkins' Restaurant about 1530 on Friday. Met most of his family over the course of two days, a highlight being the tour of his brother-in-law Klaus' abode. Wow... Maybe Scott can post some pics because I failed to get any myself, but his place is a shrine dedicated to his world travels and should be in the Ellensburg register as a tourist attraction.

I got to see all Scott's bikes - I'd really wanted to see his two Gitanes but he's got an early Klein mountain bike and his dad's Teledyne hanging up in his office, too - along with the greenish Peugeot and a Univega he's building up for one of his boys. He's got quite a collection of cycling literature as well, and he kindly lent me a couple of books I'd not yet read. Some great bikes and books - oh, and the biggest collection of sewup wheelsets I've seen since my racing days!

Hit the sack at around 2200 and next thing I know it's 0630 Saturday morning. Pancakes for breakfast and then the requisite 800mg Motrin for dessert :)

We didn't hang around long at the start as we had a 1300 appointment to keep - more on that later. As Scott points out, there were a surprising amount of vintage bikes and the Fuji was the most interesting in that the owner had it back from his racing days. It was a little chilly, but I figured I'd warm up quickly enough trying to stay with this mountain goat I was paired with for the day; I stuck with the short sleeved jersey and knickers to ensure my knees stayed nice and toasty all day.

Headwind was pretty stiff most of the way to Cle Elum, the halfway point. A decent group was there when we arrived so a local paper reporter/photographer got a group shot and began asking questions. He did a 5 minute interview with me, mostly I think because I'd come from so far away, although he did seem a little incredulous that the bike I was riding was around 40 years old.

The return was a blast - there were some decent climbs, but nothing really steep - just rollers and a few long ones with slight grades. Note there is only one picture of Scott shot from the front. That's because I was always behind him! Well, we did go up one short climb where I told him I was determined to beat him over the top. I did - just barely - and that's when I looked over and saw him in his 52/15 - I was in my 42/26! Talk about a hollow "victory"!

Yeah, that guy can climb!

Once back in town we loaded up the bikes and picked up the kids to head off for the CWU Wildcats game at 1300. They beat up on Simon Fraser University (Canada) for their first win this season; this was particularly cool for me as I'd not been to a live game in perhaps ten years.

Better write up than me! Had a great time and was glad you could make it! Especially cool to be sitting there at the finish with our burgers and have the Raleigh owner ask if he could lay his bike on the grass next to ours. Absolutely!!

Note: Looks like I had already lost the jersey pocket before Hwy 10. Oh well, needed a new one anyway.

Brother in law is Klaus, Scott? I know a Klaus, pretty sure there's not to many of them in this town. He's a fellow Odd Fellow member, I was sitting across from him chatting over dinner just a couple weeks ago. I'd say small world but, it's Ellensburg.

Must be two Klaus' in town - my brother-in-law is only here in the summers and then off to parts unknown around the globe.
