Foo - Beautiful Boats

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm building a boat.
Damn there are some pretty designs out there.

I love the deck on the Wally Esense:

And the Wally 118 is just ridiculous in a Bond villain kind of way:

warning: wooden boat building is just as addictive as bikes can be.

That is my fourth one sheet skiff on the horses, a summer breeze is against the wall, on the other side of the wall not shown is a 16' pirogue. And all I wanted to do 3 years ago was build a small sailboat.
Wooden boat journal is great above the bilge, and I have found the magazine to be pretty useful also.
enjoy. and keep us posted in one place or another on your progress.

I thought that was an OSS. I built one, assembled it on 09/11/2001, I'll always remember that boat. I was a good way to keep my mind off the F-16 flying over my neighborhood. Anyway, that's a fun boat to build, and a fun boat on small ponds and lakes. You making this plain or fancy?

Fancy, red cedar chines and gunnels, luan panels, finished bright with spar varnish. need to make the knees and breasthook and it will be ready for the finish.
Bolger, he will be missed, as will Payson. It was Payson's book that made me believe I could build my own boat. Beautiful boats in function if not form, and many were both.

You can build a whole boat out of a single sheet of plywood? I have no place to store, nor a way to tow a boat, but damn if that doesn't sound like fun.
Storing your one sheet skiff when not in use
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk221/switters_bucket/DSC01487-1.jpg
The shelves lift out, they are just resting on the frame (top) and cleats (bottom)
skeg was extended so the boat will stand upright, total height is just under 7'-6".
the boat weighs about 35 lbs, easy to car top.

It if did it would be up to the gunwales, unless they were maybe 90lbs each. You can build a pretty functional but unattractive boat for 2 or 3 people out of two sheets of 8x4 plywood.

These box boats sail better than they look but are so simple to build you can turn a couple out in a day.

I've actually built a couple, even out of cheap 1/4" wood they're good for a couple of seasons use. There's a few more at Alltoona and you're instincts are right they're good for fishing because they're basically a 8' jon boat. Also if you don't put an outboard on one, you don't have to have it registered or pay the tax. ;)

Absolutely, but that would probably increase the weight. You might consider just using fiberglass tape on the seams since what tends to happen is that the chines begin to warp or crack and leaks develop. Made out of decent wood and taken care of (as opposed to leaving them sitting upside down outside all winter, they should be good for years.
edit: I got three seasons out of one made with the cheapest HD 1/4" luan.

good eye bikebuddha, anything over 190 lbs and it sits low enough that the rowing becomes pretty tough, which is not exactly easy on such a short waterline anyway. a PDR is on my build list.
For two people, and good fishing, a pirogue or flat bottom canoe is a quick build. two sheets of plywood and two saturday mornings got my son and I to this point.
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk221/switters_bucket/DSCN1068.jpg
not as easy to store though at 16', still very light.

Plans?
That would be perfect for what I want.....maybe can be modified for a flat back? that way a trolling motor could be used when I'm feeling lazy. Storage would be easy enough...hang it in the garage.

A bolger teal is a hard chine design that can be made out two sheets. A very simple boat to build and it rows very well, sails ok but is a bit tippy especially with two adults onboard.

Ha, I like that.
I'm afraid convertible tops really aren't rated for any pounds. :)
duct tape
Modo, I clamp a trolling motor to my canoe. Just clamp it on the side of the boat and turn the handle 90º. Just make sure the blade is below the boat. And mind you I'm using a 20 lbs thrust small thing.

Is that a six hour canoe?
For plans, google "six hour canoe" or "one sheet skiff"
I didn't know Payson had sailed into the sunset, RIP. I have a copy of "Build the New Instant" boats in my shop\garage, with sawdust between the pages, as he would have liked. I also have a half built Pointy skiff against the wall.

Nice. What's the hull made of? In the top pic it looks almost translucent.

If you're looking for marine ply try Southern Crown Boatworks. They specialize in wood for restorations and if they don't have what you need they can usually get it. If you're looking for real wood I advise getting out of town. Up in the mountains there are companies who will cut you what you're looking for (like 1x10x16 pine) like Mt. Yonah Lumber.

Excellent choice, I would like to do a skin on frame someday. I met Dave at a wooden boat messabout he organized here before he moved east, great guy to deal with. can turn out a SOF kayak in a week.
