General Cycling Discussion - commuting tires and fenders for 29er

Hello everyone,

I have ordered the Cube LTD SL 29 2012, and I am looking for tires and clip on fenders for the bike.*

The problem is that I don't know whether the fork and the frame of the bike have enough clearance to mount i.e. a big apple tire
and secondly if any of the mudguards I have found can cover the tire and provide adequate protection.

I have chosen these fenders because I think that the bike doesn't have eyelets(in front) and also doesn't have place for the screwed mudguards (in front)

Before anyone can advise on tyres, how far will you commute, on what type of surface and what kind of load.

I am going to commute for 20 to 30 kilometers per day. The surface will be 90% road with some potholes and 10% pavement. When you are talking about load I guess you mean my weight plus any other weight I will have with me. So I weight 70kg and my backpack is about 10 to 15kg. Additional load at the bike (lock, rack, etc will be about 2.5kg). I think thats all.

At the following link, hovering over the picture you can have a pretty nice zoom of the bike. I think I saw the rear eyelets you are talking about, but I can't see any front eyelets also

It seems that at the rear I could mount a stable mudguard. At the front I am not sure (I guess it has to do with the fox fork). You can also see the clearance for the tire at these pictures.

Can anyone help?

A 32mm commuter tyre should be fine. Schwalbe Marathon is a good standard model. The Marathon Plus has extra puncture resistance.
Big Apples are nice tyres, I used the 26" for a 2x6 mile commute but its better suited to cruising round town and riding cobbles than for faster, longer commutes.

For actual commuting the Marathon Plus are the better choice. They are relatively heavy and slow-rolling, but they will not slow you down as much as stopping to repair a flat tire will.

People have had junk go through the sidewalls, but you have to try pretty hard to make anything go through the center tread section.

The 2.3-inch Big Apples are good in other uses but not this. They can rub on chains under some circumstances, and it's tough to find full fenders that are TALL enough to fit around them.

The suspension fork won't mount a normal fender, but there are MTB fenders just for suspension forks that will. They are smaller than full-length fenders however, and won't keep you as clean.
For the rear you may need a MTB-specific fender also. (-a full-suspension MTB is not really the ideal choice for commuting-)

Check the Schwalbe Marathon Supremes in Kevlar bead. Much lighter than Plus. I have the 40c and really like them.

I wanted to try a fat tyre, cause I've heard that they don't slow you down and you can get a better grip from those. I know I can find a variaty of tyre widths for those tyres (listed bellow)
Marathon Plus
47-622 (28 x 1.75)
42-622 (28 x 1.60, 700 x 40C)
40-622 (28 x 1.50, 700 x 38C)
32-622 (28 x 1 1/4, 700 x 32C)

Marathon Supreme
50-622 (28 x 2.00)
32-622 (28 x 1.25, 700 x 32C)
42-622 (28 x 1.60, 700 x 40C)
28-622 (28 x 1.10, 700 x 28C

and some mudguards which could fit the bike and the tyre.

But I am not sure the max tyre width that can be mounted at the bike. Can anyone figure it out from the pictures given at my previous post? Or does anyone have a fox 32 fork and knows the max tyre width that can be mounted on the bike?
