Cyclocross - Sette CX 1 Review an

I posted here about a month ago looking for reviews on the Sette CX 1. Well I bought one from Pricepoint last month and figured I'd do my own for your reading pleasure; or not. :rolleyes:

I got the frameset and outfitted it with stuff I had on my old bike and alot of new schwag. I am very impressed with this bike. It is stupid light (15.26 lbs. as shown) and very comfortable compared to my Cdale. CX9. It has a 1.125-1.5 tapered headtube and the front end is simply spot-on. It's hard to tell if the bike(frameset) is stiffer than the CX9 because the bike is so damn smooth. I'm 51 and the Cdale. was just too harsh for my old bones. The CX1 is like butter, but has all the stiffness I'll ever need and carves turns like a Kershaw knife.

Sette really did a good job of making the frame user friendly. The internal cable routing is super easy to run your cables, but they did put a braze-on for the F.D that is right in the place I run my K-Edge chaincatcher. Luckily, I live in Boise and one of the K-Edge guys races cross and is going to hook me up with a fix.

The only other issue I have is the paint. Right out of the box, a small patch of paint flaked off just below the fork bearing race. Also, I chipped a seat-stay installing the brakes and it wasn't much of an impact that did it. With that said, I'm not too concerned at this stage cause it is a cross bike after all.

that's a really clean build, and pretty light to boot. what's your parts list to get tot that weight?

To pile-on the knife metaphor: like a supremely sharp knife, one must use some degree of control, else one might(did) suffer the consequences.

Yea, I may have to agree. I raced them Sat. and since I didn't get a pre-ride in, I had nothing to compare them to on that coarse. I really don't recall having any thoughts like"damn, whats with the tires". On Sunday I raced my A race with some Hutch Piranha 34mm tubeless(race wheels showed up when I was the start line). They were fine and my only issue was some slipping on a couple steep parts. I then raced with the XGs (32mm)and on the warm-up I could tell a large difference in traction during the turns and they felt dead or something like that. I tried a couple air pressure changes and ended up with more pressure than I wanted but had to get to the start line. The coarse had not changed very much, in fact the heat had started to dry out some corners a small amount. I was slipping on most of the corners and went down on one that really took me by surprise.

I'll mess around with them a lttle before I pass final judgement.

Ill add a little more to what i said before. Before i got my tubs up and running i was training on a set of A23s with Bontrager Jones cxr which have a a 127tpi casing and are surprisingly supple. They are designed as a mud tire but are good all around and great once it starts to get moist. I live in the south east and for the most part fall/winter is pretty dry. From everything i had read tubulars were supposed to be the way to go so when i finally got mine glued i was excited to see what kind of an improvement they would make. It was a fairly normal dry day and after riding on my newly glued Vittoria Xgs for about an hour, i was pretty disappointed. I was much slower around my usual course and went down once while dismounting to run over a log when my rear wheel lost traction. I think the Vittorias don't have tall enough or closely spaced enough knobs. Looking at a Challenge Grifo they have the round knobs on the outside and much more of them. I think i am going to replace them either with grifos or with tufo Cubus front and Primus rear.

I e-mailed my wheelbuilder last night to give him some feedback on the set I just bought from him. I brought up the issues I had with the Vittoria's, and he said that was his experience also. His recommend was the Tufo Flexus. I only paid $81 for the pair(new), but now it looks I'm in the market for some Tufo's. There is a good write-up in the 2009 Velo News comparing Challange, Dugast, and Tufo. Wish I'd of seen that last month.

I'm still going to experiment with pressure and surface conditions before I chuck the Evo's, but don't be shocked to see some slightly used Vittoria's on ebay. :)

What size are you going with?

p.s. I was stationed at MCAS Beaufort from 80-82.

First off i have to say thank you for serving our great country. The MCAS is about 3 miles from m home across the river, and the "sound of freedom" still rings loud and clear. Today i tried out my friend's Flexus Primus 34s and they felt much better than the Vits. I rode the vittorias first and then the tufos and i could tell a difference. I think if there was more grass the vittorias would be better but around here they just don't have enough grip. I think that i would go with a Cubus 34 on the front though, just for a little more front wheel traction. Since we are not racing uci a 34 will have better traction just because of the wider casing, so i would definitely go with a 34. If you search in google "Velonews cyclocrss tubular review" you will find a comparison of the different brands. I only went with the Vittorias because PBK was plowing them out at $37 a piece(i am sure you found the same deal). My friend said he would buy my tires for $20 each to put on his back up wheelset so for now until i get some Tufos i am going to race my Bontrager clinchers and hope i don't pinch flat.

I seem to remember something about the 34 Cubus having tread spacing that V/N was not happy with. I agree about going wider, in most if not all the conditions we have, a 34 seems like the way to go.( like you, I went 32 based on price/availiblity) I too, have the same chances of crossing UCI rules as I do NASCAR rules........zero.


edit: It was the Challenge Fango 34, not the Cubus with tread issues.

Just completed my CX-1 build and I gotta say, I'm loving this frame.
