Mountain Biking - What's it worth? OR...Should I just keep it?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This is not a for-sale or spam posting. There is a seperate section for that; and also Craigslist.

Way back in 1999 (I think....maybe 2000) I bought a Trek 7000 with an 18" frame. It was a little too small for me, and I put maybe 10 miles on it.

I gave it to my father, but he never rode it. At all.

Since then it has sat in a garage...unloved.

I just recently tried to pump up the tires and the rear tube popped through the tire; thus scaring the bejesus out of me (it sounded like a gunshot) and making me realize just how long this thing has been sitting around.

Is this thing worth enough to warrant selling it and putting the proceeds towards a cheapish (probably used) cyclocross bike? Or should I just slap some road tires on it and call it a day?

(Photo is not my bike but just like it...except the fork. Mine has a http://sporting-goodsonline.com/rock-shox-judy-xc-suspension-fork-1-1-8-.html)

By the way...when I say it didn't fit....I mean it was CLOSE. I could probably put a longer stem on it and be mostly happy.

What level of components are on it? I'd bet it's worth something. No idea how much without knowing the components and if the fork still works fine. In any case, someone on CL would buy it. Maybe $200 or so?

The one in the pic looks like a 1998. The 2000 ones were a brighter yellow. 1999 came in green and blue only.

Around here olde MTBs don't bring much. Pristine maybe $200 like 3sp said. Some cities have hotter MTB markets though so you might ask higher at first.

As to what to do, that depends too. Were you gonna get a CX bike to race CX? Or were you gonna put slicks on that, too? Cuz you can race CX on a MTB. Usually no barends allowed. Just get some light knobbies and hit it! Schwalbe even makes light 26" skinny knobbies 1.35" wide!

If you're just looking for a non-roadie road bike, then a rigid fork to go along with the slicks would be nice .

If you are selling, where you located?

Treks of that era had some crazy short top tubes. The effective top tube on my 1999 Trek 4000 is WAY short for an 18" bike, about the same as my 15" Mongoose. I put a 130mm stem on the Trek and it's a sweet ride.

Check out how the bikes line up:
