Hybrid Bicycles - I think..I finally decided on a bike, can you help me witha couple of questions?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I ride about a 14.5 mile commute (one way) on the side of a 4-lane where there is some debris: coal, gravel, broken glass on occasion, also there is a mountain I have to cross.

I'm looking at the Trek 7000. Can it hold fenders? Does it come ready to install?

Of the 7000, 7100 which would you prefer for the price. I was thinking about the Quick 5, but read that it really has to be rigged going as far as welding pieces on just to get racks on it.

I may still get the Quick 5 and just use a backpack. Its def between the trek 7000, 7100, Fx 7.1, Quick 4 & 5.

Any ideas on this? Keeping in mind it's gonna be used about 3-4 times a week sometimes more sometimes less between 15-30 miles on those days, on the shoulder of a highway.
Potholes and stuff arent' a big deal so I'm not sure that I couldn't just save some money and go without suspension.

Slimrider if you are reading this. I found this bike shop as my LBS the Giant dealer is another 110 miles down the road, literally. If you were wondering why I didn't head to that.

For about the same price you could go with a GT Traffic 3.0. I'm just not "feeling" that bicycle. I mean 7 speeds in the rear, Tourney derailleurs, suspension seatpost (never satisfied with saddle height), threaded headset. With the GT Traffic 3.0, you get an Acera rear derailleur, 8 speed cassette (to make sure you don't end up with an old style freewheel), threadless headset, no suspension and even locking skewers that will cause thieves to take more time to steal parts off your bike.

But, that bicycle does have the holes in the frame to put on fenders, yes. Also, it looks more like a comfort bike than a hybrid. You may want a hybrid for long distances like that. I don't think the laid-back style of a comfort bike is ideal for 14 miles.

Ah, tough call. I think I'd go with the Cannondale Quick 5 between those two.

I just put fenders on my Trek 7100.

I don't have any experience with the other bikes mentioned, but I really like my 7100.

Another consideration could be the Diamondback Insight RS. It comes with fenders. And it's an Insight. Very good bike and goes for $299.99 on sale. Can be had via Performance Bike or Nashbar.
