Utah Residents,

I am going to be in Salt Lake City in first week of November and was thinking of driving down to Moab for a few days of road biking. Any thoughts on whether it will be too cold by then? I can bundle up (I am coming from the East Coast and used to commuting in the winter when it is dry) but am also concerned about precipitation and whether roads will be icy by then?

The weather should be excellent in early November, maybe a chance of showers, but mild temps and NO ice unless you get very high in elevation. The road rides along the Colorado River and Castle Valley should be excellent, and if it's nice the ride from highway 191 out to Dead Horse State Park is great. The ride in Arches National Park is also great, lots of climbing, but beautiful and good roads. I'd take warm riding clothes just in case cool weather come through.

November can be very nice in Moab.

The drive from SLC is about 3-4 hrs. If there is weather it will be dicey driving over Soldier Summit, or over the San Rafael Swell if you go that way.
Just east of Moab there is great road riding in Grand Junction, CO too.

A beastly climb a bit south of Arches is a climb from Utah 191 up Lasal Mountain. It runs for 10-15 miles with quite a bit of elevation gain, esp. right near the start. Great views as you work your way up too.

the ride from highway 191 out to Dead Horse State Park is great...if you like riding chip-seal, as it is on UT 313

......if you ride out to Dead Horse SP, be sure to ride to the absolute end of the road to the parking lot at the rest rooms, then walk another ten or twenty feet to view some of the most incredible views you will ever see.
Riding anywhere around Moab is something very special. Make the effort to get there you will never forget it.
