I am thinking about getting a Genuine Innovations Ultraflate CO2 Inflation Device for my Trek bike. Does this device work with off brand CO2 cartridges, like the kind used in Crosman BB guns? Thanks.

Yes, BB gun 12g will work just fine. But I much prefer the 16g carts, they are worth the extra money to me. I get so few flats that it's not really a huge financial burden.

Agreed. The only thing you have to watch for is threaded vs non threaded. Most inflators only take one kind or the other, but I think some of the newer take either. Go for the unthreaded as they are cheaper.
As for 12g vs 16g which size is best depends on your tire size. If 12g fills your tire, no real need to hunt down 16g ones which seem to be harder to find. 12's fill up one bike just right, 16s are perfect for the other, but it is a pain keeping both around, so I am going to just go with 12s and carry an extra.

So to confirm, you have used an Ultraflate that looks like this, the current model called the Ultraflate Plus, with non-name brand, "generic" 12 & 16 gram cartridges?

I would very much like to hear from anyone with success with generic cartridges & specific Genuine Innovations inflators. Thanks guys.
Anyone tried one of these with generic cartridges?

The pictures you posted are of the newest models. The closest thing I have to what you show is the ultraflate next to the seat-pack. yes, I used it with 12G BB gun style carts. In addition I have used it with 16G, and 25G threaded carts. I wrote GI and asked for one of the newer cups so I could use the newer 16G threadless carts too. They sent me one.
Other GI products I have used are the Nano, and the Road pump/ hybrid model. All of them work really well, but I still think the Ultraflate is the best inflator out there.
I called the company & a very helpful employee explained that any threaded cartridge is OK. Stick with 16gr unthreaded is what she said.
I get 30psi in a 26x1.95 MTB tire from a 16gr. Then I wait a minute & get another 3 or 4 psi out of it.
This is the one I ended up with:

It's a bit difficult to get on the valve with a 36 or 40 spoke wheel, no big deal.

yes if your going for this style the non-threaded one's can be bought at walmart for cheap.
If you don't mind paying a little extra for the threaded one - GI sells a nice pump called the Second wind which is a standard pump with co2 option.. These are great if you run out of co2 and need just a standard pump.
That makes sense as I always carry a pump to get a little air in the tube prior to mounting.
What's wrong with a pump? We have enough cartridges thrown around bike trails.
+1 on a pump vs CO2. Better for you and better for the environment.

Exactly. You can limp home forever with a slow leak and a pump. You can help unlimited strangers with flats with a pump. After the initial cost, it costs you nothing to operate. I'd recommend a Topeak Road Morph.

get the best of both worlds - the GI second wind - standard pump w/ co2 option..
