the bike is listed for 295, however he is now selling it for 225.
it has the vintage suntour components and obviously is in good condition.
I'll be using the bike as transportation mainly.

It's a decent bike but nothing special. It might be a little over priced but since it is in such beautiful shape I think it is worth it. Looks like nearly all components are aluminum, most importantly the wheels so it won't be too heavy. I give you the green light if it fits and you can get it for 225 (try to get him even lower).
Best of luck!
That bike is in great shape, but alas, it's an entry level model. I know very little about Sterling's, but the stem mounted friction shifters are giving that away, as are the dropouts and brake levers. $225 is steep for that bike, but Thrifty Bill will probably be able to put you within $25.
Not worth it. Sterling was another Ben Lawee brand but the bikes were primarily made in Taiwan. I came across one myself, higher level with Tange 900 tubing, very good condition but build quality was mediocre (there was a pretty big gap between the dropout and seat stay it was attached to). Low end components don't help either. You can do better.

I've seen 3 sell on our local CL for less than $100 in the past year.

Condition is excellent, but the bike is not. $100 max.
