Good luck. I tried to borrow a bicycle when traveling to San Antonio in 2009. At least I could still walk around town.

This reminds me of a song about a little old lady from Pasadena. You might want to spend some internet time checking out the differences between rental companies and see if you can find her a deal in Phoenix.

There are a number of Zipcar locations around Phoenix in case she doesn't need the car everyday.

Have you thought about just purchasing a car for the duration and selling it when your mom leaves?

If I'm ever in Dallas, I may take you up on that offer (my two road bikes are 58cm and 59cm). I don't want to use your car. :)

A Texan will not loan you their car, because what if you damage it? 1978 Cadillac Eldorados and 1993 Ford F250s aren't as plentiful these days, and then you have to replace the steer horns on the hood, the horn that plays Dixie, and the "REMEMBER THE ALAMO" bumper sticker.

Excuse me sir, but we do not have horns that play Dixie. Our horns play (clap clap clap clap) "Deep in the Heart of Texas." And the only reason I will not let him borrow my car is that I would just give him one of the older ones that do not have revolvers for door handles or diamond encrusted hub caps.

I KNOW about the BF (sitting on the stairs, smoking while Rube fixes it for him) but I'm thinkin that OP can go over there and just take it. Ya know, use Rube's spare key and such. And I was thinking that the car in PR can be used if OP gets it outta hock.

No experience with, but as someone else pointed out, Zipcar has locations in Phoenix (mainly ASU). $8/hr or $66/day. Upside is that she could potentially save some money by just renting one for a couple of hours a day. Downside would be a) getting to/from lot to get the car and b) possibility of car not being available.

When she looked into renting a car from like Avis and the like, did she pick the airport location as the pick-up/drop-off site? She'd save some coin if she picked up from a lot not at the airport- either pay for an expensive cab ride or possibly coordinate a ride from a friend of the step sister.

do0de, well, I think we are all sympathetic. But no one is able to help.

Have you done your homework and actually priced rentals in L.A. and Phoenix? Did you check rentals away from the airport, they are often cheaper.

It's possible that she may be able to rent a car cheaper from a place like Rent A Wreck in L.A., which rents used cars, than she can in Phoenix, which does not seem to have a similar company. For your plan, you also have to factor in the cost of going to and from the airport by cab, shuttle or however she could get there, and the cost of the flights, which according to Priceline is about $139 RT if you are going to fly her to Phoenix.

And there is the slight possibility that your Mom may want to drive because there is some great scenery and it's nice to get away from town for a while. She could take a break in Palm Springs and enjoy the scenery and the ambiance, and then another stop in Quartzite for something completely different.

You might do better, say at the website of the Arkansas Bicycle Club, where the members tend to actually live in Phoenix. You could also try asking in the City-Data forums for Phoenix (http://www.city-data.com/forum/phoenix-area/).

And my comment about Barrett Jackson wasn't a joke. I see now that I was a month off on the dates, but since collector cars appreciate, it's quite possible to pick up a bargain at auction and sell it for more later. My ex did. She made about a 50% profit in about a month.

hey Artkansas, thanks for the helpful info.
sorry, didnt mean to kill the buzz with my comment.
worst case scenario is she spends a ton of $$$ renting the car in LA and doing the drive. she definitely loves the drive and has always considered retiring in sedona, but i feel its safer and more cost effective for her to rent a car in phoenix. thanks

Someone mentioned buying a car. It might at least be worth looking in to. Figure what the cost of a month-long rental would be (I've done it once. I don't remember the exact cost, but I'm pretty sure it was at least a thousand dollars for a bottom-rung rental from Hertz), and see if you can find something usable to buy for that much or a bit more. Once the month is up, you can turn around and sell the car. Even if you lose some money on the deal, you'll probably still come out ahead of renting.

I looked at Enterprise in a town in the Phoenix area, looks like it would be about $735
for the base, plus applicable insurance for a Chevy Aveo. I agree with you about strategy.

Who here would dare to insure an Aveo?! I mean come on, one tap and it's toast. Then you, Enterprise, and GM can all celebrate at the loss of one more Aveo!

Last I heard your former car was converted to a dune buggie by Los Desperados and used to haul weed/dope up from the PR coast off the reef runners.Best forget about that car if you know what's good for ya.
