Anybody around here has done some monitor calibration on the cheap? Do I need to buy a task-specific tool or a webcam will do?

If you have Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro you can calibrate your monitor from within the program. Look under color management.

Presume you are talking about computer monitor and not a flatscreen tv.
Yes, you can use Photoshop or Paintshop Pro. I did it with Paintshop Pro, got totally confused and didn't like the results. I did buy an i-One and use it to calibrate. Kind of a tossup between that and the Spyder. It nags me to re-calibrate every 4 weeks but you can turn that off. The good news is that LCD computer screens are much more stable than older CRT and can defer for 6 months.
I've done it for customers I delivered photos to who thought there was something wrong with the photos and were "correcting" them - then they saw the original emailed file on my monitor and realized it was theirs. Since we are local. I could swing by sometime and calibrate it. Alternately, you don't have to buy the $200 unit. There is a local camera rental place near Aloma and the 417 that will rent for 1 week for $20. http://thelensdepot.com/shopping/pgm-more_information.php?id=108&=SID#MOREINFO While they are internet/shipping based, they do make arrangements for local pickup.
