Friends of my from Europe are coming to visit me. We want to go on 3-4 days bicycle trip, maybe in Long Island or NJ. I am not a bicycle expert. Where I can buy maps with a such trip? Any ideas for such trip?

Thanks,

Zalek

We need to know more about your plans, such as when they are coming, whether you will be camping, whether they are experienced riders or not and what they want to see. Without this information, it will be difficult to help you. There are too many possibilities.

If it's not during the winter, you can pull up an old North Fork Century route on bikely or something, & work in a couple wineries for wine tasting. Then maybe take the Orient Point Ferry up to CT & ride back down that way.

I live in NYC, Queens and my friends are coming from Czech Republic. We are in decent shape, we want to drive about 50 miles a day and stay in cheap hotels. We will carry all our stuff in with us on a bike. What we are looking for trail without too much of car traffic.

Thanks,

Zalek

I'd suggest taking a LIRR train from Jamaica to (say) Patchogue; ride east from there to East Hampton or so; north from there to Sag Harbor, cross Shelter Island, Greenport, then head back west along the north shore for a bit, then down and along the Peconic Bay a while, through Riverhead (not so nice, but there's gotta be a cheap hotel there), then through the pine covered hills west of there, ending up at another LIRR train station, such as Ronkonkoma or Port Jefferson Station. I can give you a pretty good route for most of this. Eastern Long Island is extremely varied, makes for interesting riding, and is pretty flat.

LI is all right, but I don't know about cheap hotels & low traffic. You might want to check out the Erie Canal (Barge Canal). There is a thread here in this forum about it.

Useful information, I may be visiting that part of the states myself next year.

Both are valid concerns, but it's off-season now, which helps on both counts. I have a house out there, so I can't speak to the cheap motels issue, but I've done enough riding out toward the east end that I can assure you there are some very nice quiet roads. It is true, however, that you have to get on a busy road every now and then to get to the nice ones. For best results, ask someone who's been there.
