General Cycling Discussion - Cutting the handle bars on a Trek FX

Got a Trek FX and the handlebars are wide, kind of like mountain bike handle bars. I was thinking of cutting about 1/2inch to 1inch off each side. I prefer a more narrow width, but I've really only done shorter rides on this bike. How might the cutting affect comfort for longer rides?

I've used a pipe cutter on aluminum bars to get a straight cut. 222204

These are short riser bars? Those tend to be a bit longer than flat bars.
At any rate, 1/2 to 1 inch off each end is fairly minimal.

. . . assuming there is still room for grips, shifters, and whatever doodads you think you need hanging from the bars.

Which fx and what year? I don't think the IsoZone bars on the 2011/2012 7.3 and up can be cut.

Move the controls and the grips inward and see how it feels, first,
and experience the difference before you cut the bars down..

If they can't be cut, then I'll just have to get new bars. Not a big deal I guess.

BTW, cutting the bars was somewhat of a secondary objective. My primary goal was to swap the strange Trek grips out with some Oury mountain grips. But if the bars can't be cut, then I'm guessing Oury's aren't going to fit. So I'll definitely have to get a new bar.

I have a 7.3 with those same bars, you can't replace the grips or put bar ends on them. Trek has been promising bar ends that will fit for about a year but so far hasn't delivered. There is a thread over in Hybrids about it.

In fact you can't use much of anything standard with those bars, I had to modify a small Zefal bar end mirror to get it on mine (don't like the big Trek mirror that fits). It's a pain, I've considered changing mine, but haven't decided what to put on.

I've seen a few good options at treefortbikes under $50. I'll probably pick one and order it in the near future. Thanks for the info. Damn proprietary bars.
