Classic and Vintage Bicycles: What's it Worth? Appraisals and Inquiries - Peugeot px 10 frame

I picked up a 70s px10 frame with the intention of doing a full restore. The previous owner had sprayed a coat of black over the original paint to disguise it so it wouldn't get stolen. Ive been successful in removing most of the black paint with goof off and fine steel wool. This method has thus far preserved the original white paint and decals underneath.
It's proved to be too big a job for a man with a 1.5 y/o and another due next week. I'm considering listing the frame on eBay as is but I want it to be worth my while. I've verified its a real px10 and I'd like to get the most possible for it. There aren't any on eBay right now so it's hard to gauge value. Anyone got any idea as to how much I can expect to get for it?

Not worth your while until the black paint is gone. Most buyers on eBay will assume original paint can't be saved ( otherwise, they assume you would have finished it). Kind of like buying any damaged goods via the Internet.

I bet that was a lot of work. The size is big, I have been proven often that the very tall get the great deals, maybe tall guys are just thrifty, and keep a tight hold on their wallets.

The harder work will be to remove the black at the lugs, if it was a popular size then it might be worth the effort, as it stands... I doubt it, get what you can, and play with the young kid. Much more rewarding and a better ruse of time. What you have done does prove its a Peugeot, the Nervex lugs tell the model.

$150. max in my mind, but those thrifty tall guys will want to only spend $100. at most, do tell them it has a bottom bracket, that is worth something.

I'd take $100 sans BB.
I could list the BB, nervar cranks, mafac racer calipers, and a ttt stem separately.
That would equal some nice upgrades to my newly acquired Trek 420 touring bike.
Some hammered alloy fenders and leather bar tape would really spice that thing up.

Parting out would bring more if the BB & crank were Stronglight. The BB looks like a Nervar unit and I'd be real surprised if it was in good condition. The Nervar stuff is nice but under appreciated by collectors. The Mafac racers were on every U08 so there are literally millions of them out there. I'd be surprised if you got more than $50 for the combined total of the components.

I would not pay much for it in that condition, I can only assume that you couldn't get the rest of the paint off and it needs a full repaint. You've saved the decals so far, that's probably the hardest part. Finish it up if you want a decent amount out of it. Otherwise, I'll give you $50 for it! :p

I'd love to get my hands on a quasi - trashed high end frame like this. I wouldn't feel bad about building it up with whatever I had on hand , and could probably get away with locking it up outdoors.

Ugh. I don't understand people who "disguise" their bikes so they don't get stolen. I generally assume that they're actually either hiding some damage or the bike isn't what they say it is.

Last time I saw my 72 PX-10 was 1974 in the police impound lot painted black, as I had already accepted the insurance check and just could not deal with the tragic new paint job we parted ways, now comes the story of a PX-10 returning to the owner 26yrs later and another thread where a black 70's PX-10 is being restored with goo-gone and steel wool-what if that is my baby?

What if in deed? The man I bought it from didn't seem like a thief to me. He was true enthusiast in the early days. I refuse to believe he'd paint a treasured px-10 black for any reason than the one he gave me: He himself was worried about it being stolen when he employed it as his daily commuter.

Mebbe so, but it can be a royal pain trying to find a big frame...

No worries mine was recovered by the police, painted black by the thief in 1974 and I went to court to see the little bike grabber get a slap on the wrist, he also had taken my friend's orange Gitane and a Schwin Continental from another friend-all sprayed black, every time I pass his old home I get so angry!
