Hello everyone, while riding my kilo tt the other day I had a rear tire blowout just as I was about to get to the top of a hill on a two lane road. I backtracked a bit and couldn't find the culprit that caused it, which is not to say there wasn't one, but was also wondering if I might have just gotten a defective tire, it had barely 100mi on it. Was hoping to get some input from you guys since this is my first road-worthy bike and I'm honestly lost on what might have done this type of damage. Additional info: serfas seca wire-bead tire, inflated to 120psi right before ride (max 130psi), never skidded on this tire. http://i.imgur.com/qnlc5.jpg

Looks like a really clean cut by a foreign object to me. The blowouts I've seen were usually very uneven, with the strands of the carcass showing.

You could also post in the mechanics section to see what they think.

Some sharp debris on the road lacerated your tire when you must've ran it over.

Wow down to the seconds huh squirrelli?

Whatever took out that tyre was razor sharp... my have been something embedded in the road rather than on it.

Damn, I was hoping to be able to sue someone hehe, guess it's not the tires fault though. Sixty Fiver, I'll take a look at the area of road since its the first time I've ridden it, but will not be the last. Thanks.

Puncture, then failure along the weave. It shouldn't do that.

The tear in the tire is exactly parallel to the threads. The tire was punctured by something small and sharp...you can see the small hole at the bottom of the tear. The tire then catastrophically tore open along the threads. The puncture is not the fault of the tire, the irrepairable tear, on the other hand, is the product or a faulty tire. Buy some gatorskins or something else decent and be done with it.

I had a tire do the same when I hit a utility knife blade. It sucked, there was no way to boot it and I was 10 miles from home. It was a Conti GP attack which added to the suck.

Its possible to ride it on the rim if given no other choice. I had a flat once in a surprise catastrophic rainstorm. I mean this was the hardest rain I have ever seen. I couldn't see ten feet. While I was standing there trying to fix the flat, the water level rose to knee deep ina few minutes. Them my pump somehow blew apart when I tried to inflate the tire. Still raining cats and dogs, I tried to make a bail-out phone call and my phone shorted out. Having no other out, I rode 9 miles home on the rim. The tire and tube were shredded and the rim got a few small dings, but the wheel still works fine several thousand miles later.

Did you try layering multiple boots? That does the trick usually for longer gashes/ cuts.

That, and running really low pressure -- just barely enough to keep the rim off the road.

You find any throwing stars nearby? Sounds like a ninja was out taking some practice and your tire got caught in the crossfire.

I'm gonna go with mihlback's explanation, but I was kinda hoping to find a sweet hunting knife or something to at least get something out of the situation. At least I only had to walk half a mile to get back home though.

re: tire boots...

sure, the old dollar bill trick works...but tyvek works better. go grab a priority envelope from the post office and cut it into strips. tyvek is super thin and super strong and is a perfect boot material.

My tire was literally cut in half, almost bead to bead. I don't think it would have held. I called in reinforcements and got a ride home.

Gorilla/Duct tape on the inside and outside of the tire can work. Booted inside and out, plus around the rim once you have a little pressure in the tire. Rode about 25 miles including gravel on a cloth utility tape boot after catastrophic failure several years back. Will be a "bumpy" ride tho.
