Hey guys, so I've recently picked up a stock 08 stp2 off a mate.. Just wondering what's a decent set up I can put on it.. I've just started getting into 4x and a bit of DH, so I'm a bit unsure on what parts would be good..

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Welcome. I have to assume it's this particular version:

First thing I'd probably look at changing is ditching the Suntour fork for something like a Marz Dirt Jumper or similar. Next up would be brakes: not so much an issue if you were just flowing the DJs or skate park; but if you're actually going to start racing 4X, you're going to want something you can depend on.

From there, I'd say just ride the thing until stuff starts giving out and then replace it. The Suntour cranks/BB will eventually give it up, as will probably the wheels. But just take it a piece at a time and spread the pain.

Nope, this model http://www2.giant-bicycles.com/en-au/bikes/mountain/1129/28946/?collections_id=3

I believe most of the gear on it is gunna need replacing, it's definitely had a bit of a trashing in it's short life haha.

Haha - - wasn't sure so I had to choose. Chose wrong. Say, the AU version is spec'd a bit better than the UK version. In your case I'd definitely just replace things as they break/wear out. I'm guessing the wheels are probably about had. If the hubs are good, I'd just get rims/spokes and lace up new. If the bearings/hub flanges are toast, then get new wheels. I'd also think about going single ring/chain guide (Straitline SG or Gamut) up front and maybe a better derailleur and shifter out back (like X9 shifter/X7 short cage).
