I've been riding a lot of single track on my Cross Check lately and the 700x32c's are just barely cutting it.

I'm having a really hard time finding a knobby tire in the 700x42-45 range. I hear people talk about the Panracer Firecross and a few others but I can't source them for the life of me.

I may be completely off here, but will a 29x2.1 tire fit my wheel? I'm not too concerned about fork/seat stay clearance on the Cross Check.

Any suggestions or links would be super helpful.

Try a 1.8 or 1.9 29er tire, like a Bontrager Jones XR 1.8 or Kenda Karma 1.9

The conti is great for single track. Another is the Michelin Transworld sprint http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/TI299B08-Michelin+Transworld+Sprint+Tire.aspx, larger than the 42 conti.

29" -- 700C, Same rim diameter. Most 29x2.0/2.1 tires will not fit in the Cross Check, though. The suggestions for the 1.75/1.8 Bontrager tires is right on. There is also the Schwalbe Smart Sam 28x1.75 (700x47) that should fit.

Nice review. Have you used these for commuting during the winter? What bike are you using?

The Kendas are on my Salsa Vaya. My commuter (SOMA Saga) runs either Vittoria Randonneur Hypers or Conti Contact Extralights.

It's not just that a 2.1 probably won't clear the frame on the Cross Check (53mm if it measures true), the stock rims just aren't wide enough to run a tire that size without worrying. Just my opinion though. I've run as wide as 37mm (true measure at 39mm) tires on a rim with the same dimensions as the Cross Check stockers (if they still stock the DA16) and they're pretty squiggley feeling in the corners. Too much speed on them, and I'm always worried about rolling the bead in a tight turn.
My top end of comfort is 35mm on a rim that width. For anything wider like a 37 - 42mm tire I like stepping it up to a wider rim like the Sun CR-18 or Alex Adventurer.
