Bicycle Mechanics - old groupset compatibility question
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Yesterday I was assessing the bike graveyard in the garage and noticed that I have a bike with shimano Exage 200CX drive train but no shifters. I tried to find some info on the exage, and apparently it is 7 speed and indexed. I also have a pair of sora 3x8 brifters.
Is there any chance that these will work together? if it might, what do I do for a back wheel? do they make 7 speed casettes, or do I have to find something with a 7 speed freewheel?

I'd think you'd want 8 speed. The RD has the correct cable pull ratio for indexing and the shifter, being 8-speed, will be indexed to the spacing on an 8-speed cassette.

cool! I was hoping to scoop up a set of those clearance neuvation wheels for this build, and i think I've got a spare 8sp cassette laying around.
