Mountain Biking - Input, I just ordered a Scott 2012 Scale 29er Elite without riding it!

Yes, I know how could I? Well I got a huge team discount that spoke louder than common sense. I am a Cat 4 road/ Crit racer getting back into mountain biking after a 20 year hiatus, yea early 40's for age. My son is 15 and we have been riding together on the local trails. After using my wife's 1989 Trek 7000 rigid, I borrowed a few 29ers to try. I am hooked. Loved the Giant XTC better than the Cannondale Flash 29 3 Lefty (got to take both on hard rides) and was set on the Giant as I have bought 5-6 bikes from the local LBS. Well the top 6 racers on our team get a special discount and Scott was the company I could order from so I picked the Elite as I didn't want a carbon frame, and still wanted a hardtail. The components and fork are similar to the XTC1 which would have been about $850 more than the Scott. Couldn't justify the cash difference. Well anyway, I plan on recreational riding with my son and eventual mountain bike racing if all goes well so I wanted some decent components. Any input is appreciated!

I doubt it will feel much different than the XTC

So . . . you got in on the 'huge team discount' without the intention of racing?

I did well road/crit racing this year and was awarded the discount on one bike. I'm all set in the road ride department so the timing was perfect to get the mountain bike. Each of the six racers can use the discount on one bike.
