I'm in the process of having a little modifying fun with an old turbo. I stripped of most of the foam, but there is a thin layer of residue still left on the vinyl base. Is there a quick chemical solution to remove it without damaging the base, or will this come down to sanding?

I've had good luck with something called Bestine (active solvent mainly Heptane)sold here as thinner for rubber cement...even better luck with Naptha, also sold (with perfume added) as fluid for cigarette lighters (like Zippo and Ronson). Have not seen either of those solvents damage sound plastic, but...that's no guarantee, proceed with care.

I've used the Ronson fuel with success to remove sticky stuff.

Coleman fluid is Naptha aka white gas.
