General Cycling Discussion - Should I feel guilty putting an old steel road frame by the dumpster?

I live in a somewhat rural area and people around here rarely ride a bike that isn't from Target or Wal-mart. I have an old steel bike frame on Craigslist for $10 and I haven't got a single reply. Should I feel guilty just putting it by the dumpster?

It's a Raleigh frame from the 70's.

Post it in the C&V Marketplace subforum. Someone might take it there. If not, at least save the head badge. You might get some $ for that one on ebay.

Donate it if usable to a worthy cause or just recycle it. Why risk having it land filled which is always a distinct possibility with anything left by a dumpster?

It would be nice to donate it, but no where around here to donate it to. As for selling it online, I'm sure common sense would dictate shipping a steel bicycle frame isn't cheap. And I'm definitely not going to pay a fee to post it. There's just something inherently wrong about paying to give something away. In any case, I'll figure something out. Space here is tight so it needs to go soon.

I hear ya. Most towns have an easy metal scrap yard that will happily take steel frames...

Last frame I purchased cost $26.70 to ship from California to Georgia USPS Parcel Post. Postage was paid by me, the buyer. I'd imagine if you listed it on eBay you'd be able to make at least a few dollars in profit. As long as it's not an Ashtabula crank sized bottom bracket it's rare for a frame to sell for less than $30-40.

Failing that stick a sign on it that says "FREE"and leave it by the end of your driveway. Someone will grab it up in short order. Might be a scrapper but it also might be someone who can use it.

I wish I could have found someone that wanted it. People in this small rural town have little appreciation for such things. As for shipping, it's a hassle. You have to find a box that's the right shape and size to hold it. A bike shop might have one, but that's driving around and burning gas. Then you have to box it, burn more gas going to the shipping facility, hope you didn't underestimate the shipping cost, have ebay take their cut, have paypal take their cut, and hope in the end you didn't pay to sell it. Oh, and then there's the possibility of the buyer complaining about something you might not have noticed and wanting a refund. And all of that just for something you wanted to give away for free. No thanks. Anyways, it's out by the dumpster now. Au revoir.

If you can't give it away, put it out in front of your house with a sign saying For Sale $100, and it will be stolen in 10 minutes.
