View Full Version : Cat Question........

OK, I have a serious question. Annie has taken to napping in MY laundry basket. No one else's, just mine, or on any of my clothes if I set them out for tomorrow. Why is she doing this?

Yesterday, I loaded my laundry in the washer, closed the lid and turned it on, the lid suddenly popped up, and a wet, POed cat came racing out.

And that didn't cure her of that???

N o, she's asleep in my laundry basket right now, in yesterdays clothes.

That is curious. I've found that my cat will occasionally start doing seemingly random things on a regular basis, and then after a while she simply stops. To me it makes no obvious sense but I'm sure there's a reason for it. I just chalk it up to cats being utterly insane.

Why does everyone in your household have personalized laundry baskets?

If I leave anything on the floor the cat pukes on it.

Because my wife has a lot of cold wash/delicate cycle stuff, and we'd rather sort as we go than to sort it at the machine. I have a whites basket and colors basket (20, and so does the wife, except she also has a delicate cycle basket (3).

Trying to figure out cats is harder than trying to figure out women.

My cat likes to sleep on laundry too, although she's never made it into the washing machine. :)

My old cat would pee on my laundry and only my laundry if I was one day late changing the litter box.

I wear socks at home. I usually leave them on the bed when I go take a shower in the morning. When I come back the cat is napping on them.

Cats are really affected by smells... to them some smells we think are pleasant are nasty (they generally run away from perfume) and some smells we think nasty is heaven. Catnip stinks yet they love it. Just as a cat gets to know their mother by her smell, a cat gets to know their human, mother subsititute (the difference between dogs and cats - dogs see humans as part of a pack, cats see humans as their mother - cats will stay kittens forever if you have a close bond. I have a 17 lb kitten - great!). Your smell is comforting. It's like laying on "momma". It's sweet...

If you want the cat to stay away from the basket, spray some orange oil on it. Cat's hate that smell. Dirty laundry, not so much...

When I was younger we had a big fat tomcat that would try to nurse on your finger and knead just like a kitten. It was really cute. My 15 year old female cat still kneads when she purrs. :D

To prevent this from happening again, just make sure the laundry basket is out of reach of the cat. Put it in a high place, for example on a wardrobe.

+1 I read that putting some clothes outside your house is a good way of helping your lost cat find their way home - (for indoor cats that have snuck outside and gotten lost - this happened to one of mine a week after moving into our house)

I had a cat who liked sleeping in my school backpack. Every morning I had to shake her out of the pack but one day she snuck back in and I didn't realize it until I reached the elevator and my backpack started wriggling around and meowing. Seems she liked sleeping in the pack but not when it was zipped shut and tossed onto my shoulders.

My cat sleeps in/on my laptop bag if I leave it laying out. I'm known at work for having a hair-covered laptop bag.

Plus the clothes don't move around, so the cats' think they can stay there indefinitely, sleep and dream about their master.

My little cat likes laundry fresh out of the dryer, but that's probably because she's old and thin and has no insulation of her own. When there's no laundry around, she's a complete lap hog.

Won't work. My parent's cats have been known to get stuff off the top of the fridge.

If I leave my dresser drawers open one of my cats like to sleep on my clean socks.

Only cat ?. Possibly a territory thing, sleeping there marks her territory ?.

I had a cat that loved my stinky armpit. Loved to nudge and rub, especially after a hot day at work. No clue what smells attract a cat, other then catnip and it all changes over time as the cat ages.

This. Plus she has places in my house that are hers - next to MY pillow, on TOP of me if I have her favorite fuzzy blanket on over me. They are hers, and if the other cat comes around and tries to cozy in - he either gets a vampire chew or a smack. Mine she says. Same with HER favorite toys (especially ones with new catnip in them). My little Ming the Siamese rules the roost I would say.

The dryer can be a bigger problem when the cat crawls in there to sleep and their servants turn on the dryer without checking for the cat.

Never have a cat without a girlfriend or wife to take care of it for you, or you will be a slave. But then you're pretty much a slave if you're above ground anyway.

I'm a slave to my cat. My dogs are happy but useless helpers. I no longer have a woman, but that just means I don't get "perks" that go with being a slave.

Pretty sure this is it.
Our dog does something similar with laundry, for what I can only imagine is the following reason: She pulls all the washcloths and towels out from the hamper and rolls around on them. As pack beta, she knows it's her job to do things like keep watch when we sleep and cover up weird scents that might make us "trackable", so she tries like hell to cover up the scent of soap on the washcloths and towels with her own. My wife uses some scented body lotions and the dog tries to lick those off immediately; you'd think the time the dog got a tongueful of Icy-Hot off my legs would have taught her a lesson, but no...

OK.

I'm trying to get a handle on this.

1) You just dump a load of laundry, wholesale into the washer. No sorting, nothing. No checking for ink pens, cocaine vials, negotiable bonds, nothing.

2) Cat is so passed out (from WHAT?) that it lays doggo (if a cat can do that) while you make the final prep for washing.

3) You didn't try to put the cat back in?

I can't speak for your cat.. but that would be about average for my cat... he moves his sleeping/hanging out spots every few weeks it seems and then picks a new one..sometimes it gets quite odd especially when a 17lb housecat pops it's head out of a space that looks 3 inches wide...

For cats, I recommend a warm wash / warm rinse, followed by a cool tumble dry.
If it is a long-haired cat, add some softener to make the fur easier to brush out afterward.

Presorted, already, and I don't leave pens in pockets, they go in the briefcase, and no vials, and negotiable bonds, etc, are in my Safe Deposit box or safe.

She had had a large session of "Chase the laser"

3) You didn't try to put the cat back in?

Not a chance! I did rinse the soap off her in the sink, though, while wearing heavy leather gloves, body armor, and full face helmet with a faceshield. She still has all her claws.
