Hi all. Have just been given an older road bike by my brother who bought it from a shop second hand but was confident everything was in good working order.

The problem is when loading the pedals in first gear eg on hills the rear derailleur jumps out back to 3rd or 4th gear The gear levers are mounted on the down tube (old style).

Is it just a case of tightening up the friction in the lever so that it is stiffer to change gear or could something be more serious? The throw of the chain up and down the rear cassette looks fine from a quick try out. Thanks for any replies. Dave

Tightening the screw for the shifter is a good place to start, although sometimes ghost shifting (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/autoshift.html) can have more sinister causes.

Does the gear lever also move when the bike jumps from your desired gear? If so, just tighetening the friction screw should solve the problem.

Thanks. That seems to have sorted it. Funny thing is really I should have tried that myself and got my hands dirty but forums are so easy (and get you so fit!). Thanks again.
