I would love to ride it but wonder if I could ride my road bike or if you need a bigger tired bike? I believe that like the south 8 miles have been paved, but don't know how well the rest is packed!

I didn't know this trail existed. I'm a big fan of the Katy and this looks like it could be a possile side trip.

It looks like a good time! I have picked up a better bike for it! I found a real nice Diamondback Wildwood. Seems like it will be the perfect bike for a rails trail!
Now I just need to get some time set aside to rise it!!!

The 8 miles from Springfield to Willard is paved and pretty smooth; there are several stops - some legit, others are just driveways... the bulk of the trail is crushed gravel, and extends another 25-plus miles, for which my road bike is woefully inappropriate.

I live in SW Springfield, and have ridden to the trailhead -then on the trail to where the gravel begins - then back home (for a total of around 40 miles); my longest rides since I got back on the bike this year, and not very hilly like my rides south and west of town.

Road bike tires (23 - 25 mm) should be avoided on the crushed gravel sections; if I were to haul my bike to the trailhead and ride the pertinent 8 mile stretch and back, it would take a couple of times to make it worth the trouble...
