I'd forgotten about having one a few years ago and cancelling it after getting annoyed about something they did until I got an offer to get another one. But now they're offering a $100 REI giftcard and a freshly caught bass if you get one by the end of the year, and that's an offer I may not be able to refuse. Anybody happy with their REI credit card?

But what would the monthly payments be?

Depends on what you do with the bass. I let mine go and it costs me nothing.

Would that make it a freebass?

Hmm, an offer I can't refuse...., maybe I should be a nice guy and offer you an Asian Carp in return.

I am waiting for them to impose an inactivity fee or something before I close mine... I have bought two things there since mid-2008. One was to finish off my last gift card, the other was from REI outlet.

Maybe you can close it and then reopen it by the end of the year for the goodies.

It's been my primary card for quite a few years. No serious complaints, but they do sometimes get a little over-eager with their fraud detection algorithms. Then the card gets declined until I give them a call and let them know the charges are legitimate. The first few times happened because my daughter also has a card on my account and she charged something in Mich. at about the same time as I used the card in Calif. But recently their algorithm kicked in because of too many gas station authorizations. I swiped the card at one station and noticed that the price on the pump went up substantially once it registered that this was a cc rather than a cash purchase. So I cancelled the transaction and went to a nearby station that didn't pull this kind of price switch. The gas purchase went through fine, but then when I bought a meal later that day it got declined. Called up and their rep said that there were 4 authorizations from the first station and 2 from the second which seemed suspicious so they put a hold on further transactions. Seems like their system is double-counting and also counting both authorizations and cancellations.

I like my REI card, I use it for everything and every year I get a couple hundred bucks of stuff from REI for free. They have a big selection, OK prices, great return policy, and the staff at my local store are pretty well trained and knowledgeable.

I've had an REI Visa for several years. Never had a problem with it. Waiting for them to charge a yearly fee. I'd dump it if they did. I'm a deadbeat (pay it off each month.)
I used mine once to buy a $7000 vehicle. Got a bunch of REI dividend bucks for that.

I think you are being warned that the enticement of the gift card and bass may be a lure to draw you into the briar patch of consumer debt.

That's why I recently applied for one of their cards (I do buy stuff at the REI near me, so its not a bad deal). I've got a Chase VISA, and tehy can't seem to do any fraud detection. I had someone jack my account a few years ago and got $600 in Itunes charges, numerous internet purcahses, and airline tickets from Manila - Hong Kong charged to my account. Called up and got it cleared, plus they signed me up for a year of their 'enhanced' fraud detection (for free). Even with 'enhanced' detection, they didn't stop another (different) hacker from using my card for all kinds of purchases. No thanks Chase, you can keep your crummy service.
