I just wanted to post a short note for people here who are dealing with arthritis. Resveratrol is a plant substance found in grapes and many other plants that seems to be useful therapeutically in a great many diseases, including arthritis.

Its worthwhile going over to PubMed and having a look at the studies for yourself.

I buy resveratrol as a 50% powder, and its quite cheap. Its most effective if you simply put it in your mouth and let it absorb in, but it also might be effective in some conditions topically - with the right carrier, which wouldn't be water...(It does not dissolve very well in water)

It might offer some people a substantial benefit - literally a huge improvement.

One thing, a warning. If you take resveratrol, make a note to yourself to remember that it can give you a negative PSA test even if you have prostate cancer. It may reduce the spread of prostate cancer, but it also may make the most common test for it show negative when in fact you do have it. Something to be aware of. I don't think most doctors spend the time reading about this kind of thing, although they should. For more info, go to PubMed and type in "resveratrol psa" without quotes. Apart from that, it may be a promising new therapy for PC.

Do take caution, though, about online recommendations for new medications or supplements that have not been adequately tested in humans. Our scientific history is littered with drugs and supplements that seem fine in models using mice or other non-humans, but then don't have the desired effects in humans. We also have to be careful about using refined specific molecules. It's very healthy to eat grapes, peanuts, and other sources of resveratrol, but we don't actually have large studies yet to show safety for taking refined resveratrol.

We have excellent data to show that a diet high in fruits and vegetables, especially coupled with lifestyle rich in exercise, is healthy for us. My personal preference is to eat the yummy fruits and veggies and to avoid the manufactured or refined products. More research may show that refined resveratrol might be good for humans, but given the history of similar products, this seems unlikely.

The bottom line for ANY online discussion about medical info in any case. The only person who can advise on medical topics is a doctor not online forums, twitter,Facebook et.al.

I know a lot of people today don't have any access to medical care but asking online is playing Russian Roulette with a fully loaded gun that CAN mean your life if you follow online advice or stories. It is much,much better to find a clinic to get medical help from.

Its true that a great deal of online information about health and supplements is at best misleading and quite often, wrong. And doctors often take a conservative path with herbal compounds, because of the admonition "first do no wrong"

Also, many herbal compounds, like for example, the beladonna alkaloids in atropa beladonna, which are used by doctors to dilate eyes.. can also cause dangerous side effecs, like hallucinations or even death, i.e. "deadly nighshade"

Resveratrol, an active chemical in grapes and red wine, is considered part of a sacrament in the Christian community.. and its curious and interesting on many levels that of all things, a compound found in red wine has been found to extend animal life. Not quite to the "eternal" level, but still, interesting.

Everything in science is "interesting" though, even things which seem irrelevant.

Be careful, with all foods and supplements..both for safety and because of poential exposure to pesticides as well..

I wouldn't say its unlikely.. at this point.. I would not say that at all.. because it's been a huge help for me.. But My own experience may not be others..

I hear prolotherapy is going mainstream and getting recognition from the Mayo Clinic and the Harvard medical school.
