If you are handy with tools and enjoy working on things mechanical, buy a good used mountain bike and learn how to care for it.

:) Welcome to bikeforums...You're getting some good advice here. If you buy new or used, you want to go to your local bike shop (lbs) and talk to them. Tell them your budget, the type of riding you do and keep asking them questions. The idea of buying used is good, you can get a good bang for the buck, it will probably have better components than a new bike in that price range.
Also, test ride, test ride and keep test riding. Ask the person at the bike shop questions and test ride some more. Good luck in your hunt.
