going to start building a bike.
need a bike stand first.

got a few questions.

is one of those two-bike wall mount storage units good enough to use as a stand? they're cheaper and would be useful in this household.

i see these park tool stands littered all over ebay.
is it any good or is there a better place to get a decent stand at a decent price?

The wall storage unit won't work as a workstand since it won't hold the bike sufficiently enough to eliminate the bike moving around. You could probably use it to clean the bike, but for anything more than that, I'd stick with a stand.

The Park stand you linked is actually a pretty good price. They're biggest fault (I've haven't actually used that model, but based on appearance) is the clamp is fairly simple in design. However, it's probably plenty for your needs.

I'd make one if I were you. It's not hard at all!

Some 2x4s from Home Depot, steel brackets and screws. You may want to get some of those air-con insulation foam tubes to wrap the parts where your bike will come in contact.

A 10ft 2x4 shouldn't cost more than $10.
A couple of metal brackets shouldn't cost more than $5
Screws... oh well.
You will need a saw. A hand saw is good enough.
Might need a power drill/screwdriver. A home-use Black&Decker 12V costs within $50.

Just sketch a design. People at Home Depot may give you a better sense of what you need to get.

My point is, you don't need the aesthetics. All you need is the function, so I don't see why I will pay that much for something so simple. The only reason why they cost so much is because the sales volume is small.

Wait till you see a ****** aluminium folder that costs well over 100 bucks.
