Advocacy & Safety - New bicycling restrictions in Columbus, OH?

Hello: I was riding home from the library a week ago and met a cyclist pulling an really interesting trailer that he had made himself. We talked for a few minutes while I checked out his trailer, and he told me that there was a proposal in Columbus to treat bicycles the same as mopeds, requiring them to buy licenses, etc. I did a quick google search and didn't find anything, and am wondering whether anybody here has heard of any such thing.

I haven't heard of such a thing. He could have been pulling your leg. Did he have an Electric Motor on the bike or trailer?

No motor. He seemed upset about what he was telling me, though I can't be absolutely sure he was serious.

He was pulling your leg, or he could be over reacting to something he thought he might have heard somewhere and thought it was true.

Not that I know anything about the specifics of what's going on in Ohio, but ...

People (usually not people who ride bikes, wonder why?) are always suggesting that cyclists need to get licenses, insurance, etc. -- but nothing ever comes of it. At most what happens is that bikes need to be "registered" but even that is usually done away with or not enforced shortly afterwards.

I'd say don't worry about it unless you hear specific, credible information from somewhere that can be verified.

If he thought cyclists needed licenses to ride bikes, he might have just caught wind of the "same road same rules [laws]" myth.
