Bicycle Mechanics - Sugino vs Velo Orange for indexed shifters

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I have a VO double crank with friction, works great. Anyone use their triple with indexed Shimano? Work OK?

Wow, I think you really need to explain. Do you mean Sugino shifters? I googled Sugino shifters and don't know what you're talking about. And a VO double what? Is it a crankset you're talking about?

The OP wants to know if a Shimano triple indexed front derailleur and a Velo Orange crankset will play nice together...

Oops, my bad. Yes, VO crank with indexed shifters.

Real men uses friction. not index!

lol, well, some men would think they don't need to shower and use a deodorant either.
But, even though it's still not completely clear to me, if you're talking about a triple front derailleur on a double crankset, then I think all you'd need to do is set the limit screws to only reach both chainrings. (If you had a double FD and wanted to run it on a triple crankset, you wouldn't be able to convert the double FD to a triple.)
Now, if you were to ask a question like: "I have an 8 speed drivetrain, can I use a 9 speed crankset?", I would say someone took the time to examine the difference between an 8 speed crankset and 9 speed crankset. He/she found the ramps and pins are at different locations on the chainrings but will still allow acceptable shifting. And also he/she measured the width of the chainrings and the distance between the chainrings, it was the same with an 8 speed crankset and 9 speed crankset. I think that's why some people say 9 speed cranksets are 8 and 9 speed compatible. But, an 8 speed chain on an 8 speed crankset would shift more perfect.
So, I don't konw if that's good enough because the point of the question still wasn't clear to me.

The question is about Sugino vs Velo Orange. Indexed shifters don't always work well with all components. I just want to know if anyone has used a Velo Orange crank with indexed shifters and if it worked well. I have had good luck with Sugino, but VO makes some nice stuff too.

Haha, oh really? I recently bought a 7/8 speed Sugino Impel 150x 42/34/24 (for a build I want to complete in the next few months) and a 7/8 speed Sugino XD 350 48/36/26 (for a future project). Which Sugino cranksets have you find work well? :)

depends.
what cranks are you referring to?
what speed? what shifters? what derailleurs? what cassette? chainring teeth-count?

lol, I was kind of thinking maybe he was texting while driving. "Work OK?" is not even a complete sentence.

Sincerely, if the OP uses friction and not index, the shifting in the FD is just a mere detail that he shouldn't be worry about at all. In a matter of fact this really non understandable thread shouldnt even been open hehe.
Use friction man!

OK you jokers! I will now go outside and shoot myself! Yeah yeah yeah, it's a combo of all components that makes the world go round, not just one component.
So, using an Ashtabula one piece crank from a Schwinn varsity, a gold anodized chain, and a rusty Huret derailleur, will a bear **** in the woods on a down tube friction lever?

VO has d/t friction shifters

that's not true at all.

Well I'm assuming the FD has enough travel too :P

...and speed compatibility, compatibility with chainring sizes, crank arm and chainstay clearance, etc. plenty of factors to consider.
friction is nice on the front, but it doesnt mean it makes everything compatible with everything.

Yeah, but even if some of us tried to get more information out of the OP, he/she never bothered to say exactly the number of speeds of the cassette, chainrings, etc. Whatever, it may have been someone texting while driving or something else...
