Winter Cycling - Winterize your bike

What are the best things you can do to winterize your bike? Use a wax based lube? WD40 each spoke nipple? Ride with a pole strapped across your butt in case you fall through the ice? Lets hear what works and what don't.

Put a coat or two of wax on the frame before it gets too cold and make sure all pivots, bolts, threads, etc are cleaned and well lubed before the bad weather approaches. They use a ton of salt on the roads here in NJ, so I do a good cleaning/relube at least once a week. If the roads are wet, I'll clean/lube right after the ride.

I use a nice gloopy chain lube (Finish Line Cross Country) which handles most of the crap and still shifts nicely. Have to make sure I keep my rims and brake blocks clean as road grit down here is incredible and eats rims in no time. When it gets really filthy, I move from slicks to fat knobbies and ride slower. Plus of course a ton of lights.

Best thing you cna do for your bike in winter? Store it indoors where it can dry out.

On the frame, for the same reason people wax their cars - to protect the finish. Road salt is very corrosive and wax will give at least a little protection. Plus it make it easier to wipe off grime.
