Here's a tough article to read about bike manufacturing in the U.S.
Things have sure changed since the days of the fabulous red or blue Schwinn under the tree.

Funny you should mention "red or blue." I just rescued one of each color from a garage sale. Schwinn Varsities, late 70's, men's blue and lady's red. All original from the LBS with the era speedometers (1000 and 400 mi respectively).

BTW, your link goes to a "sign-up" page.

nm, I did a search for the story and I guess sign-up is required to read it. Guess I'll look for it somewhere else. I already get enough junk email.

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/6642037 - is the same story from the Wash Post.

No sign up needed. Funny 30 years ago, all the expensive road bikes were imports (European mostly) and the cheaper bikes were made in America. How things have changed and reversed.

A sad story. My grandfather worked at the Chicago plant as a tool and die maker until his retirement in 1978. I grew up with Schwinns. My first bike was a crate Stingray Fastback.

An homage to where our ecomony is headed. We are no longer a manufacturing ecomomy.

You want to read a SCARY story about our economy read the current issue of Business Week, cover story. "The China Price", 15 years in the future the once mighty USA will be nothing more than an economic colony of China. The pic of containers waiting shipment abroad in itself is a frightening thing
