Hi,

I have a new LED torch but am having trouble finding a good place to mount it. I have shimano brifters so the gear cables are in such a location that they block some of the beam if the torch is held above the bar, if I put the torch under the bar then my knee hits it when I ride out of the saddle.

I have tried on the end of my drops, but the light is angled up too much.

I already have a light on my helmet and use lockblocks to mount the light.

Any tips on where I should try next?

Nitto Lamp Holder

With the Lamp Holder you add a considerable amount of real estate for mounting headlights, computers, heart rate monitors and whatnot, compared with the handlebar alone, or with any other handlebar accessory I know of. The Lamp Holder is eight inches long, and 22.2mm in diameter, so anything designed to mount on a handlebar can mount to this, with the exception of a handlebar bag that uses the handlebar as its sole support. I have the two clamps as close together as possible in this photo. But of course you can position them wherever you like as long as you're at the center large diameter of your handlebar. These will not fit the new oversized carbon fiber handlebars, only 26.0mm bars, the traditional road size. If you have 25.4mm bars, we have shims for sale, made by Nitto.

Here we have two headlights, a Lumotec Primary and E6 Secondary, a Busch & Müller F Lite, a Cateye computer and a Topeak computer (the closest thing I had to a heart rate monitor) with still room to spare. The gap between the handlebar and the Lamp Holder bar is 1.25" or 31mm.

Here are the same to dynamo powered headlights, plus two B&M Ixons for backup. Anyone doing Paris Brest Paris should have backup lights. And the Nitto Lamp Holder gives you plenty of space for them. $ 89.00

A space bar is one idea. A lot of folks don't seem to think of it, but the space bar can be pointed either straight up, or down.

Another idea is to fork mount it. I made my own mount several years ago from PVC...

You could similarily use the Aber Halo (http://www.thorusa.com/dahon/accessories/handlebar.htm) for $37.50 plus shipping and If you need more real estate the bar could be swapped out for a longer 'pipe' or whatever from the local hardware store for cheap. I just have a hard time justifying $89 for a mount when my light probably cost less then the mount itself :)

If you want to go even cheaper, you could also use the $20 double stem (http://www.dealextreme.com/p/folding-bike-modification-aviation-aluminum-double-stem-kit-black-55496). The downfall of this one would be that it fits a specific sized bar and also it has to be 'slipped' onto the bar by removing grips, shifters, brakes, etc...and of course takes longer to receive. Cheaper option for the budget conscious who's not in a hurry.

Minoura Space Grip (http://www.amazon.com/Minoura-Access-Bracket-SG-100-Silver/dp/B000AOZ1KA). I have several of them. I have replaced the round bar part of the grip with a 1" aluminum tube (longer than the original) because it fits most light mounts better. You can pick up 1" aluminum tube at your local hardware store.
