Curious, how many online names have you had. I have always seen the question "what does you name mean" but I wonder how many they went through. I have been online since 85 (ran my own bbs pre-public internet) I am lazy with my names. Only 3 and variations thereof (1's for i's for example)

1 - Ariakas was my first. Based on a d&d character I had that kicked ass
2 - Maelstrom was my second but the first I used when I hit the internet full time (I quit computers for a few years) I chose it because of a book and because of the way I played bball (I tended to scare people when I dunked on them, oh what a feeling)
3 - Roasted...not sure why I switched but the 2 sites I used it on a Maelstrom didn't suit. I have used maelstrom in online business talks at times so I look at it like the clean brother, Roasted is more casual and less caring. I also switched because of a certain habit I had a year or so ago and the fact that I ride a kona roast.

Anyways, curious, do you have multiple names floating around

When people pray, I prefer for them to call me Jesus, otherwise I usually go by God or Most Gracious One, but when Im surfing the net its BurlySurly.

oh, I thought it was a tribute to the great rocker, Yngwie Malestrom.

You're thinking of that toolshed Ynwie ****ing Malmstien. The soulless guitar manipulator.
You're thinking of "Malmsteen".

"Malmstein" is one of the Five Jew Bankers.*

rios

My name (rios) Is my last name. Pretty creative huh? I've had a few others, I try to choose strange names, like 'logic', 'effort', and 'empty'. Nothing really fancy.

CdCf

He uses the name Yngwie, but it's actually spelled Yngve.

I use my initials on other forums.

Koffee

Tin Man

I usually use real nicknames I've picked up over the years. The one I use here has to do with my job which has nothing to do with the Wizard of OZ.

snickersnicker
12-03-04, 09:57 PM
KlutzonBroadway - My AIM screen name for the past two or three years. It's an Antioch Arrow song.
Punk is Dead - Use/used this on VivaLaVinyl.org, FFGurus.net, SoulSeek, and I believe a couple others. It's pretty self-explanatory. It's also a song by '70s and '80s Anarchist Punk band Crass.
ImprovCultureKill - StraightEdge.com, VivaLaVinyl.org. Since StraightEdge has ceased to exist, and all the profiles on VLV were erased, this name is no longer used anywhere. One of Policy of Three's best songs.
SnickerSnicker - Here, VivaLaVinyl.org, and Barry, You're Dead! It's a song by Portraits of Past. A really, really good song.
BikeRidesHiFives - I registered this as an AIM name, but have yet to use it. I will eventually.

monogodo
12-03-04, 10:59 PM
I've only used this name in online forums. I've used other names as gaming IDs on Yahoo (Thorgodothunder, Uberwagenfuhrer, poit13, ndzscvtz).

If you're curious about where I came up with monogodo, you can read about it here (http://www.monogodo.org/pages/monogodo.htm).

Bicycling.com I am danka24

blendingnoise
12-03-04, 11:59 PM
I mostly use blendingnoise for most things, as I used to mix music and make tapes and such and used to put that on the tapes/flyers.

KrisPistofferson
12-04-04, 12:13 AM
We should make the next thread om what everyones password is! I've only used one other tag on the 'Net, Doctor Manhattan, after the character from Alan Moores "The Watchmen". He's probably the greatest comic book writer of all time, who most consistently elevates the medium to a true artform, and "Watchmen" is arguably his greatest work. Kris Pistofferson was an idea for a punk band that never came about. Oh, and my "Rap Name" in high school was Stonewall, (don't ask.)

Chris L
12-04-04, 12:22 AM
I have a genuine split personality, so Mr Spanky has one or two posts over in the archives of the Jokes forum. Apart from that, it's just been Chris L on this site (although I was known as Fatal Justice for a time in 2002), the old Bicycleforum site, the old Cyclery site, and the bike-qld and bike-oz lists.

Over on f---edcompany.com, however, I have gone by the following monikers:

Fatal Justice
Steel Fury
gnein (yeah, I know, I stole that one)
Trollman
wests
Felchmeister
Pacific Panache
Intravenous Agnostic
.
..

And there are probably one or two others that haven't come to mind as yet.

Raiyn
12-04-04, 01:40 AM
Been "Raiyn" since 1997 why change now?

Hopper
12-04-04, 06:37 PM
Hopper, because that's my last name.
And to the guy who said we should start one on passwords, mine are always car regos.

trekkie820
12-04-04, 06:41 PM
For my university logins, it is "byruma", for AIM it is "itbcrx928", which was created when I wanted to race in the ITB class of the SCCA with a Honda CRX, and the "928" is really 9-28-01, as in my anniversary with my girlfriend.

Tin Man

CRUM

CRUM when not already used by someone else. It's been my nickname since forever.

Johnny_Monkey

Mine was Aragorn, but Lord of the Rings killed off that little caper.

When I registered here, I almost used one of my 4 main passwords: the brand of frame of one of my 5 bikes. Then I realized that it would be too easy for someone here to figure it out, so I had to go with one of my longer, more obscure passwords.

cycletourist
12-05-04, 01:00 PM
I prefer BicycleBob but on forums where that name is already taken I use Cycletourist.

junioroverlord
12-05-04, 01:55 PM
dkaynai - my first D&D character

gimpyferret - went along with one of my old high school friends handles trippyferret and skitzyferret

junioroverlord - was playing the son of an evil baron on a text based rpg a while back and wanted a witty name for the message boards, it kinda stuck. That and I used to have a 40 year plan to take over the world.

JavaMan
12-05-04, 02:19 PM
Javaman - My first online name that's not my real name or initials.

I picked up the name at work. There is an expensive superautomatic espresso machine in the company lunchroom that is capable of making excellent brew. Unfortunately, the CEO had a "Decaf Only" label put on it. So once a day at around 2:00 PM I empty out the disgusting decaf beans and put in good french roast beans for myself and the other coffee lovers. I can make the switch in 100 seconds.

My followers call me JavaMan.

D&D? damn...that is pretty geeky...

I hate forum names. I use my real one.

Allister
12-05-04, 05:55 PM
I always use my real name.

At one time on Usenet I went by Roadsworn, but I only did that because it seemed to be the done thing. After careful consideration I decided there was no real point in assuming a pseudonym. Any sense of anonymity on the internet is false.

I can understand why certain people prefer to remain anonymous on the net - if I acted that way, I'd probably prefer people not to know my real name - but I'm sort of curious why the majority of people do it.

I post semi-regularly on Lugnet. One of the rules for registering is that everyone uses their real name. I'm convinced this has been a major contributing factor in it becoming known as 'The friendliest place on the internet'. And it's an unmoderated forum (or perhaps more accurately, self-moderated). It's a remarkably civil place, even on the local equivalent of the Politics and Religion forum.

Maelstrom

But allister, your name is like a fake name. It definately has its own personality. Mark, well its boring, I hear it all the time. Its nice to have a nickname to work with.

Being anonymous, in my case, is definately not the reason I use a false name.

mirona
12-05-04, 06:12 PM
I use mirona because it's my name....kinda. Well it's made up of the first two letters from each of my names. Michael Ro..... you get it.

For all my gaming and art stuff, I use A-Pek. I got this one from when someone called me "a pr*ck" and it came out all wrong. It just stuck after that.

Allister

I'm not sure whether or not I (or my parents) should be insulted by that :)

iamlucky13
12-05-04, 06:15 PM
Commander Keen - I loved that game. I use the name for gaming

jacobus_magnus13 - Would you believe that when I tried to register that name without 13 for AIM, it was already taken?!? It's Latin for James the Greater. It's kind of an inside joke from youth group, where there were two of us.

iamlucky13 was my original email because I was in middle school and it was about as original as I could come up with. I still use the hotmail address for membership websites and I use the name for forums.

Offline, a few people refer to me as "The Archenemy of all Space and Time." I thought that one was worth mentioning even though it's not quite on topic.

MadMan2k
12-05-04, 06:16 PM
First nickname was Sciengen, that's what I registered with yahoo quite a while ago, and with a few other places about then.

Then NumberedJon89 for MSN Gaming Zone. I decided it was too long, and I was into Midtown Madness. I thought of MidtownMadMan, but that was taken at a few places, and the '2k' tagline was really popular then, so I used MadMan2k. Actually, it was _Mad_Man_2k first; the reason I shortened it was that Gamesnet IRC didn't allow nicknames quite that long, and I got tired of the underscores, which were somewhat similar to the '2k'.

My latest is 'jonbuder'; I use that for Gmail, and Ubisoft.com since some other punk seems to be using MadMan2k (hell, maybe I registered it a long time ago and forgot :P)

This thread initiated a flashback - wow, the days in which I would go to the library and use the computers there to surf the internet. I'd bring floppy disks with me, and download all kinds of things to bring home, since I didn't have an internet connection.
I wrote a series of long (for me) stories about a cat (wtf?) that did all kinds of cool stuff, including surfing the internet (wtf?). hehe...

Hmmm....definately a compliment. It is a very unique name. It gives an air of authority imo

Thats why I did it. I was sitting here remembering the good old days with bbs's instead of the internet and how in some ways they were a lot better than the internet, then I thought of my names, friends names etc...

You don't have a generic name that is already taken on 9 out of 10 forums.

wabbit

On AOL I'm Moops29. There was another Moops when I registered, so I used 29 which is my birth date. Other names:

deadly nightshade
sirius (on delphi)

CRUM
12-05-04, 08:24 PM
I guess CRUM is as much my name as my name is. No anonymity. I agree with Allister. Pretending that anonymity exists on the internet is a fools game. I figure the smart folks who want to find me, find me. So, I also include my town which is only slightly larger than a walk in closet. Figure I may as well save them a few steps on the ole search engine.

roadbuzz
12-05-04, 08:26 PM
Started out here as DaNewt, based on a nickname that I had. Changed it when I thought of roadbuzz as a clever and somewhat appropriate nom de plume. I use Roadbuzz for the occasional post elsewhere, too.

Felchmeister...

Is that what I think it is?

I couldn't answer that without breaking several of the Forum Guidelines.

And that's one of the more moderate names over on FC.

I guess it depends how one perceived anonymity. I remember an e-mail exchange with one particular poster here a while back whom I thought was using his real name (quite conceivable from the alias he was using), but it turned out it wasn't. As far as I'm aware, the only people on the Internet who don't remain anonymous are those who choose not to (i.e. choose to release their own personal information).

Beyond that, I really have no idea who 99% of the people on this forum are -- only their online persona. That may or may not be an accurate reflection.

lotek
12-06-04, 08:24 AM
Lotek on an audio forum
Martye on Serotta
and full name on Classic rendezvous list. By using real names it is a
very friendly place, much like Alisters post suggests. There is something about
taking away the anonimity that causes people to well, be civil?
BTW my password is expired

Marty

Karldar
12-06-04, 08:45 AM
Hmm, back in the mid/late nineties I hopped on the internet while stationed with the U.S. Army in Bad Kreuznach, Germany and came up with(in chronological order):

bkabo-my location+my initials
deathbeeyatch-nickname that one of my Army buddies gave me(long story)
Karldar-started out as the name of my character in the first Baldur's Gate PC game and I've used it for
pretty much everything online ever since
Supafreak-used as an alias while playing TreadMarks(really fun-kinda old-tank combat/racing PC game)

That's all I can remember for online aliases. Don't really care so much about anonymity; I just have a fairly common name(Brian). Offline would be a different story....

Dad used say I was crazy for my bikes. I took his opinion as truth as he is a Psychiatrist. So, when he said I was a bicycle nut, I picked it up as my nickname. I just shortened.

I'm Bullbiker over at Ridemonkey. I shaved my head and someone said I looked like "Bull" from that Night Court Show.

I used to be vfboomer, which are my initials and my nickname in High School. I did a lot of windsurfing and the things you hold onto are booms. I broke three sets in one season. Plus, I ended a couple fights with just one or two punches, so my buds started calling me Boomer.

I also sometimes use FLMTNBKR, but that's often already taken.
