So, anyone else in the same boat as me?

Between work, freelance jobs, lessening daylight, and nursing an injury, I haven't been on the bike at all this month. This is the first month that I can remember that I've had to say that...

its ok. it is what it is. once you are injury free, you will get back on the saddle lsowly and have fun.

my work, wrenching, and girlfriend keep me out of the saddle for up to weeks at a time..so I sympathize.

I'm planning on getting out this weekend and riding around the block a couple times just to say that I did in fact ride this month. Depends on how my shoulder feels. I have a mysterious injury in my right shoulder (didn't fall or hit it on anything) that is making it painful to lift my arm past mid-chest. Went to the doctor, did x-rays and the whole 9 yards. Didn't find anything.

It sucks getting old. Random things like this keep happening...

I've been struggling to get out there and ride regularly for the past few months. The way I make it up to myself is by making the most of it when I DO get out there. Like yesterday was probably the only ride I'll get this week, so I got 20 miles in. Roll with the punches, take what you can get and just make the most of it. The nice weather will return soon.

If you ever decide to pick up a drug habit, the first hit is always free. Sometimes the same idea applies to cycling; a ride around the block can wind up getting you hooked (again) on the sheer joy of a bike ride.

Could it be some kind of repetitive stress injury to the soft tissue in your shoulder? I hurt mine a few years ago rolling a kayak, and I'm pretty sure that wouldn't have shown up on an x-ray, either.

Injuries can really kill the mileage. I live car-free, but in June my neck issues made it unbearable to ride for a while. My mileage dropped from 400-500 to just over 100.

Luckily, injuries heal. Heal well, then get out and ride. (Don't let weather stop you).

I most likely won't be getting many miles this month either... BUT, I WILL be turnin the cranks! My wife bought me a new trainer this week. I'll be pedaling in place for a while and get out when the weather and schedule cooperates!

Nursing my back and neck (and ribs), I'm getting a few miles in during therapy on the stationary. And when I get my rear wheel back, on the trainer as well.

I actually joined this club last month due to being "fried" from the summer heat commuting to and from work each day. I have finally gotten back to riding just a couple of weeks ago when I got a mountain bike ( 2008 Gary Fisher Marlin ) from CL and have been on the dirt trails around the Dallas-FT Worth area. The problem is I don't know how many actual miles I have put in so far. The old Cats Eye computer I installed to track my mileage worked fine when I had the bike on the work stand and for a few trips around the block. When I tried to hit the trails it refused to show anything but zeros for the readings. Go figure....:notamused:

people are habitual creatures and most find it hard to get back in the groove once they're side tracked. the trick is not to fall out of the groove. unless you're seriously injured/sick, i recommend riding a few times a week, even if it's 1-2 miles per ride just to keep your biking habit. everyone can find a spare 10 minutes 2-3 times a week.

I'm not looking forward to winter here in Northern MN. Depending on the year the roads can be very rough and icy and the windchill well below zero F for weeks at a time. My gym just bought three new cycling trainers, so I'm hoping that will keep me in shape for spring.

I pulled something in my "good" knee, giving me two gimp legs. I've only been able to pedal on trips less than a mile and only without mashing. It's been the lowest gear possible too..... sooooo annoying.

I really should stay off of it for 2 months, but since I am car free, I'm doing what I have to. This weekend I may brave it and do a 42 km trip. We'll see.

Sitting around thinking about bikes all day stinks.

no miles this month for me either, the bikes both went in storage last month and I finally pulled them back out last week, might get some time in tomorrow. But time is scarce right now between work and school, just have to make time I guess.

Last month I didn't get to ride at all, between having to replace my bike and a health issue. I was trying to ride even when I wasn't feeling well but I kept having dizzy spells, sometimes bad enough that I had to get off the bike and just sit on the side of the road. Then my old bike broke beyond repair and the new bike was just so uncomfortable at first. I've finally got the new bike adjusted to almost the level of comfort my old bike was at (still having issues with my right hand going numb when I ride though), the cool weather is here, and I'm ready to get out there and start putting in some miles.

Is the dizziness something temporary? If it'll go away, well, ride when it does.

If not, look into recumbent trikes. No worries about falling over.

Between work, freelance jobs, lessening daylight, and nursing an injury, I haven't been on the bike at all this month. This is the first month that I can remember that I've had to say that...

Back in July I realised that the days would now begin getting shorter. My typical routine at that point was to get home from work around 6 or 7, and bike 2 hours until dark. The realisation that my biking time would continue to shrink and shrink until it disappeared completely worried me, so I began thinking about biking to work. I basically spent 80-120 minutes a day in my car, doing nothing but getting from point A to point B. A stroke of brilliance struck me and I realised, "Hey! I already bike 120 minutes a day! I can cut out my driving and save time!".

So while it was still light out I experimented with biking to work 1-2 times a week, and it worked well, and I kept doing it until it became too dark to bike after work. Now I was biking 160-180 minutes a day, 40-60 minutes more than before, and at the same time saving 60-80 minutes of my day by not driving.

My suggestion: look into biking to work. It's awesome, and I can't recommend it enough. It's not for everybody, so if you're not comfortable doing it, don't, but honestly I am so glad I did.

I ride to work whenever I can. It's 3.5 miles from my front door to my office. It takes me 10 minutes by car and 15 minutes by bike. But a lot of times I have to go pick up my kids after work, and I can't do that on the bike obviously. Plus, I tend to get out of work after dark these days, and I have a couple small lights, but nothing I feel safe enough using on the road. I've been trying to juggle things around to where I can ride to work more often. Mainly because one of my favorite routes around here starts about 5 miles past work, and in the summer when we have enough daylight I can get in a good 20-25 miles after work.

But, right now, until my shoulder heals I can't see riding to work.

Yeah that sucks about the shoulder. I threw out my back in May and couldn't ride for 2 weeks. That drove me nuts.

As for carrying kids, depending on how big they are, I've seen some people carry two on a Surly Big Dummy before :D

Lighting is indeed an issue. I just got a Cygolite Expilion 400 for my helmet, and it's going to be dark before I leave work tonight, so I'm going to test it out! We'll see how it goes. I'm thinking of also getting a Cygolite TridenX 750 to mount on the handlebars to provide flood lighting. I'm still experimenting though.

Well, I've got a 13 year old and a 9 year old. They ride bikes with me on our local bike trails, but I go right through downtown to pick them up, and I don't trust them riding around vehicular traffic.

I have many happy memories of ice fishing in Michigan as a child. Cold happy memories. :)

Between the problems with both bikes and severe arthritic attacks in both knees, I've been out of action for two months. I did ride three days last week, but I'm a shell of my condition back in June and July. We'll see if I can get any riding in between now and my surgery in (probably) January.

So I didn't make it out this month. Had hoped to today but went to two Halloween parties last night, and from a combination of not going to bed until about daylight this morning and the mulberry moonshine that was being passed around, I just couldn't get myself outside today.

Oh well. All streaks must come to an end. Time to start a new streak of riding at least 100 miles a month next month...

I have slacked off immensely. My wife and I went to Vegas around the 20th of Sept. It was about a month before that we stopped riding the bikes (rain on weekends, things to do etc) and then when we returned we said "That's its, tired of being fat, lets ride again" I haven't been on the bike once. So since around August we've been off the bikes. I go into the garage and stare at them and say "I need to ride" then life happens and I can't seem to get an hour of time to go anymore. Now the days are shorter and colder and I know I wont go unless we try on the weekends.

I remembered I had a trainer at my mothers house with a 26" slick. I thought of it this morning. Next time I visit Mom I have to go dig through the garage and see if I can find it again. I'll mount the slick on the Fuji road bike, set it up in the spare bedroom and get on at home. I wont have to worry about cold, dark or whatever and I can watch TV at the same time. My wife and also start using it as well.

Lets see if I really get motivated or keep making excuses.
