Fifty Plus (50+) - How about another useless poll....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This one has to do with laundry....

How often do you wash your bike clothes...

Do I vote even though my wife does the wash? I didn't see an answer for "others washing". I would like to credit my non smelly kits to her.

In colder weather the gloves get washed after every ride as my nose seems to run like a faucet when it gets below 50F:(

I've never owned any bike clothes. During most of my life, there was no such thing as "bike clothes."

I lock my shorts or tights and jersey in a cage and beat them back when they get too rowdy.

Variables include how dirty they are from road dirt, slobbered gatorade, dribbled gels ... the length of the rides, sniff test assessment, presence of "skid-marks"...

So you rode naked? If not, whatever it was you were wearing was your bike clothes.

Shorts after every ride, no matter what. Jerseys and other items can wait if they aren't too gross.

Jersey, skull cap and shorts every ride. Tights I won't wash until they stand up on their own. Gloves never.

Seems to me this should be a mileage or hours ridden question, not a "ride" question. Isn't the important variable how long you have been in the bike clothes, not how many rides? Does a 20 mile ride = a century in terms of washing? I don't think so.

I general I agree with your reasoning, but having battled saddle sores in the past, my shorts go into the laundry after every ride, no matter how brief or non-sweaty it was.

When, after a ride, they are no longer clean.

After every ride, except for commuting to work. I hang them up in the shower area to dry, and wear the same kit riding home.

Hmmmm, the question is "how often do you wash your bike clothes?" I suppose that second hand washing does not count.

My wife does the laundry, but I only wear shorts once before washing them. Most of the time that is the same for jerseys, expecially between April and the end of September.

Well, you must be much older than me. I remember wool cycling shorts with chamois and wool jerseys way back in 1970. That puts you well into your eighties.

Just to clarify...

Doesn't matter who does the wash, you, your spouse, one of the kids, the servants, maid or the laundry service down the street, so yeah you can vote, even if you don't personally do the laundry. As for what constitutes bike clothes, it's what you wear when riding a bicycle.

I very rarely find myself in complete agreement with wogster, but this time is an exception. This is definitely a useless poll. ;)

Get out of here! That makes way too much sense.

Agree with DenverFox: mileage + weather conditions, not rides.
So for us, about every 100 to 125 miles which is about 1 week's worth of riding for this tandem duo.
Stoker Kay does the laundry and most of the work on this tandem!
BTW temps today in Tucson was only 90 degrees and no snow in the forecast . . . yet!

I never wore wool shorts with chamois. I started cycling in 1979, but wore cutoffs, then tourning shorts. Bought my first lycra shorts from Performance in about 1985 or 1986.

Well, whether you go by rides or distance, you not going to look at the bike computer and go, ah we got 125.001 miles on this outfit, we better pull over and change, then again maybe you do .... Most people will assess their outfit at the end of the ride, they will either toss it in the wash, or toss it into a drawer for next time. Some riders will simply toss their gear in the wash each time....

As for snow, my personal opinion, for a long time has been, A good snowstorm is one that lands somewhere else.... Although it's cooler, we have no snow in the forecast either...

When I come in and I am finished the ride for today, I toss the clothes in the washer then the dryer. Everything gets washed except my gloves. Don't wear a cap. Very easy to do. ;)

Plus, we all got more than one set of riding gear. So, even if the gear doesn't get washed right away, the next time out, I am putting on fresh gear.

More than one set of riding gear is the way to go. Ride more, due to the consolidation of chores

non wool Jersey, non wool socks, base layers, most tights, and all shorts every time
wool jersey or socks every 3rd or 4th time
heavy loose fitting winter tights (when shorts worn underneath) once or twice a month
gloves once a season

In the summer here is So. Fla. EVERYTHING is soaking wet with sweat so EVERYTHING gets washed every ride. Come the cooler, dryer weather in Oct, I become a bit more selective if I plan on riding again that day or perhaps the next. Never wear the shorts twice, but some of the other stuff in a pinch.

I have a safety yellow jersey that I use most every Tues and Thurs @ 5 am and my wife does not always do a wash on wed, so I'll rinse it out and hang it up on Tuesday nite. Everything else I have several of, so no need to worry.
