Earlier this year I was inspired by Sayre Kulp's list of goals for the year and felt that that was exactly what I needed to challenge and hold myself accountable for various sporting endeavors.

Yesterday I completed the most difficult objective on my list, a marathon, by finishing the Marine Corps Marathon in DC. It was such an amazing experience, 40,000 runners and more than 150,000 spectators lining the course and cheering us on. The route passed many famous landmarks and finished at Arlington Cemetery which was very inspirational.

It was very cold at the start with a wind chill of 27 deg but things warmed up a little as the sun came up and it turned out to be a great day to run. I was very nervous, worrying if I would be able to finish as I had not been able to train for 3 months due to IT band issues. I had only managed to do two long runs of 13 and 18 miles which in a way kept my legs and body fresh :). Thanks to all my cycling miles I was in great aerobic shape and my body managed to hold up to the pounding.

I ended up finishing in 5:15, I would have easily broke 5 hours but got a bad calf cramp at mile 22 which made the last 4 miles painful and slooooow!

All in all I'm really pleased and can't wait to complete the final goal only list, an imperial century ride. I think I will do that next week :)

Thanks again to Sayre for the idea, it provided me with just the framework I needed to plan my year, what a great year it's been!!!

Congratulations!!!!!

And to go from a marathon to an imperial century in a week or two -- sounds like you'll be doing triathlons next!

Thanks! Actually I did do a sprint triathlon earlier this summer but I don't think there will be any ironman distance tri's in my future :)

Congrats, that's an awesome accomplishment! It's my goal to do my first full marathon this coming year. I only hope that when I do, that I will be in good enough shape afterward to think about doing a century as soon after as you are talking... :)

Congratulations on crossing that one off the list. Glad the objective list worked out for you. In turn, you've inspired me to get back to work on MY goals. I've been slacking lately, LOL.

Way to go! I was at Hains Point last night, and saw what looked like large, shiny confetti all over the road. I finally figured out that it was mashed-flat GU packs left over from the MC Marathon on Sunday.

Those runners can be messy :)

Yes at each water/food station the road was full of debris, I bet the road crews had fun cleaning that stuff up!!

BTW nice bikes, how do you like your Cervelos? I have a 2011 R3 and love it!

I looove my bikes. The R3SL is still a bare frame at this point, following a frame repair. I'm waiting for the Ultegra Di2 upgrade kit to come in.

Take my advice -- USE A CHAIN CATCHER!
