Foo - How about an "I hate Holidays" thread

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I hate them. From October to January I am a total fun sponge. I end up not going to parties and if I do go its a two drink minimum before I go so that I am not such an #$$.
Thanksgiving is just a big get together to celebrate excess. I would prefer to have turkey sandwiches and give the money that would have been spent to a homeless shelter or women's shelter.
Christmas... man do not get me started. I hate that #$%# holiday with all my soul. It should burn. If you want to celebrate the birth of your Deity do it when he/she/it was born, not during the time that the institution tells you that person was born so that they can compete with "pagan" religions of the day.
In short, I would prefer to spend time off with my family being thankful for the time that we spent, the time we have and the memories that we have gathered. Why do we need a holiday for that and why for goodness sake do we need to spend inordinate amounts of money to do so?
I await your flaming.:popcorn:D

Ass.
I feel much better now.
I am the same with one exception, I love Halloween. Halloween is like my Christmas but much cooler. Next year I'm seriously thinking of decorating my yard I love it that much. We put carve pumpkins and put them out every year, one each for my wife, kids, and me. Here is this year's attempt:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-RWZHgYmUgvU/Tq3aeZtYWcI/AAAAAAAAAVA/yAQ6Mghqqv4/s400/IMG_5393.JPG
I did a Zombie 5K obstacle course to celebrate this year (best "haunted house" I've ever been to). I wish we lived in a neighborhood instead of the boonies so we could get trick-or-treaters. OK, you get it, I love Halloween.
Thanksgiving, meh, it's OK. This year we're braving the traffic and going up to see my family in CT for the weekend. My grandmother isn't doing too well and I'd like to visit with the kids for the holiday. My family is very poor so it's one of the few times of the year they get a nice spread of food and festivities. My wife's family is all divorced, so Thanksgiving down here is a hodgepodge of brief visits to multiple houses. No time to watch the games, no time to get a good buzz on, just a couple quick bites and go.
Christmas is like Thanksgiving but a whole ****ing lot more expensive and I have to deal with her family and their baby Jebus talk. Not fun at all, and the worst is seeing my kids turn into spoiled ****ing brats.

Good call.
The holidays are the only times family and friends seem to be able to get together. I love the Christmas season and I am about as big a believer as George Carlin. Enjoy it for what it is, not what big business and the church (other big business) says it should be.

@ doohickie - Which variety? Post, General mills... there are lots of flavors and varieties. Perhaps a nice granola with warm milk? I am partial to Cheerios and Trader Joe's Frosted mini wheats.
Halloween is not too bad. I think our neighbors to south have a better handle on the whole Halloween thing. Celebrate the life and passing of your family and friends. The Druids believed that on Samhain (SOW hen) the veil between the living and the dead was at its thinnest and people could cross between realms allowing relatives to visit each other.
As for George Carlin. I remember his HBO special about his Christmas card. He took a picture of his dog humping his cat and put the word Peace on it. Not Piece, no sir, no cheap jokes on our Christmas. It sounds better if you hear it from him, but a quick youtube did not reveal anything.

Disclaimer…I really love the holidays though. What I don’t like is the holiday creep.
If someone starts playing Christmas music too early, play this back at them at full volume.

Holidays are what you make them. No body is forcing you to participate, although McDonalds may not be open to serve a McRib on Thanksgiving.
If you need a change of holidays this year, I recommend Buddha's Enlightenment Day on December 8. It's pretty mellow. Winter Solstice is still pretty unsullied.

I do. When I was younger, I wanted to create a cereal called "Sog"...it would turn soggy immediately upon application of the milk. Yum! I'll pour a bowl of cereal, put on the milk, then walk away to make my coffee. When I return...it's perfect.
Oh yeah...I hate the holidays.

I used to hate the holidays, and all of the superficiality of it. People going out of their minds fighting for the latest and greatest slave-labour created junk on the planet for people they are socially required to pretend they care about. Drove me nuts.
Then one year my family and I decided we don't really care anymore. We toned down our celebrations and kept it low-key, staying near our true friends and only the non-******** in the family. It's much more fun this way. We don't go through gigantic gift extravaganzas anymore, just small amounts of more personal gifts. Hell, we don't even do the celebrations on the actual days anymore; we usually end up celebrating Christmas a few days after the 25th because it fits our schedules better.
Basically, my point is this. You don't have to let the insanity of the season drive you crazy. Do things your own way, and have a blast in your own time. Let the crazy people kill each other at Wal*Mart buying cheap crap that they don't really want but are convinced they do. Eat, drink, and be merry, and don't give a rats ass about anything else.
I spent last Christmas skiing in a completely empty park. It was absolutely gorgeous.

@Mithrandir - I would love to just stay home or do nothing or go out of town. However, my wife has her idea of what the holidays are supposed to be. I do my smile and nod for my kids. I remember one Thanksgiving that her family wanted to go to some buffet place for dinner. I could not eat a single thing there for diet reasons. I told her that I was not going to go and spend money for something that I could not eat and was not going to enjoy. I stayed home and had a sandwich. I loved it. Best Thanksgiving ever. It would have been better if my family was there, but we can't have everything.
One day when everyone else grows up, maybe we call all sit down to sandwiches, beer, exchange a thoughtful present and laugh. That would be a great holiday.
I hate the commercializing of the holidays. It's like, "You're a failure if you don't do this or buy that.". I DO like the get-togethers and dinners. Where there is women booze and food, there is me!

Got into an argument with a coworker today. He said that his phone will be a year old in a week, and that he needs to get a new one. I couldn't understand why. His current one works fine, and he plans on just throwing it in the garbage, and plopping down another $200 on a phone. He ended up calling me a ****** because I'm buying a new bike, and couldn't understand the difference (I'm not throwing out the old one! I'm using it as a utility bike!).
Consumerism. Sigh.

Why do you hate days off work so that you can go cycling so much?
Personally, I love having some extra days off work. We'll get in some cycling ... maybe some canoeing ... if the pools aren't too busy, we might go for a swim ... depending on how things work out, maybe we'll even have a day at the beach ... :)

Once in Royal David's City stood a lowly cattle shed,
where a mother laid her baby.
You'd do well to remember the things He later said.
When you're stuffing yourselves at the Christmas parties,
you'll laugh when I tell you to take a running jump.
You're missing the point I'm sure does not need making;
that Christmas spirit is not what you drink.
So how can you laugh when your own mother's hungry
and how can you smile when the reasons for smiling are wrong?
And if I messed up your thoughtless pleasures,
remember, if you wish, this is just a Christmas song.

halloweens fun, Ive worked on thanksgiving (night) for the past 11 years in a row.
christmas is ok but... I hate new years. In 2000 I lost my mom to leukemia on dec 30th after a long ugly battle. 9 years later I lost my dad to cancer on the 29th after an even UGLIER/soul crushing year. christmas was no fun those years either.
however my bday is dec 20th so my wike always hooks me up w/ the combo present. last year it was a carbon kayak paddle, two years ago she got me my Zondas. this year ?????
