While washing my bike post race yesterday, i found something quite troubling.

Since my pads had worn a few millimetres, the increased travel caused the remaining pad to begin rubbing away at the body of the rim, instead of on the brake track.

This troubles me as I want to switch to carbon tubulars next year and I'd hate this to happen to those.

Is this a common occurrence or do I just need to be more watchful on my brake adjustments?

As your pads wear, you should be adjusting the brakes to compensate. To be fair though, that is just paint rubbed off, I wouldn't be concerned about it.

Most pads for carbon wheels (especially the cork ones) wear much faster than pads for metal wheels... be prepared to change/adjust them much more often than your current setup.

carbon brake tracks + sand/mud + rain + any brake pad composite = rim wear.

2 teammates with trashed carbon track wheels (zipps and neuvations), each lsated 2 seasons of wet, gritty seattle CX

are you using stock tektro pads? i had to replace the pads in my tektro cr720s after one wet snowy ride. the pads were disintegrating at a very rapid rate. the entire brake track was covered in black rubber.

are you removing the brake shoes, inspecting them, and removing any imbedded grit..?
