Foo - Are you too EXTREME for your bike?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

If you are then consider this Craigslist posting. (http://portland.craigslist.org/clc/bik/2680104128.html)

It would be an honor to be considered based on medals and EXTREMENESS (is there a charge for extremeness?) for a bike with a Mighty Mouse decal.

Seriously, if this guy is as mighty as his bike then perhaps the bike has some Sampson like quality that we, as non-EXTREME people are unaware of. What will he do when he loses his EXTREMENESS?

I own an early 90s mountain bike. If anything the bike is too EXTREME for me!

Ah yes, an incredibly expensive billet item that usually didn't even work very well. But they were pretty.

Or, as I've seen them referred many times, "Ten times the price of Shimano XT and works half as well."

But what are you going to do? You can't have an otherwise completely splash-ano'd bike with a plain black rear derailleur!

what's the problem with stripping down an XT to it's basic parts and having them anodized?

Because this is the 90s, dude. I don't want anything on my bike that's not as eXtreme as possible. Everything has to be 3D and overly-angular billet with a titanium bolt kit. How else am I going to be rad and get vertical?

the mountain bike sitting across the office from me right now came with lots of shiny purple ano'd parts when I bought it new in '93. Even the spoke nipples were shiny purple...

18 years of off-roading and grimy urban funk have toned that down pretty well by now.

I really wanted a set of Kooka cranks back in the day. But I've always been much more subtle, and just wanted plain old shiny silver aluminum. Maybe I just wasn't eXtreme enough for the 90s.

That's hawt. I'd love to build those parts onto my bright yellow Breezer.

Ooh, how old is the Breezer? If you built it up in wild anodized billet, the proper thing to do would be to also add a Rock Shox Mag21SL for bling:

http://www.hydroponicsonline.com/store/img-hydroponics/nos-vintage-rock-shox-mag-21-sl-ti-fork-top-line_160600275642.jpg

The only problem I could see is that back then Breezers were usually pretty traditional in appearance (in other words, handsome and tasteful). The ideal frame for wild billet would be a Klein Adroit with a paint job that hinted at the coming apocalypse.

Lamplight

A Nishiki Alien painted up wild would also be appropriate, I think.
Absolutely. Or this:

Incidentally, the Nishiki Alien FS is one of my favorite mountain bikes of all time:

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a10/Zanetti7/nishiki_fs_2_2_633.jpg

I still think first gen XTR components are the best looking.

2009, and not a MTB either. Its a city bike. Would still be hawt.

I love first generation XTR cranks. Great choice for a classy bike needing low gears, road or otherwise.

I almost snagged a hardtail (or possibly rigid, I forget) Alien with some type of crazy splatter/craquelure paint job about a year ago. Missed it by that much. D'oh.

Cripes, does that Yeti have a 53/30/20 crankset on it? Shifting must be a daunting task...

A couple of months ago I was planning to build a new bike (eventually decided against it) and I was browsing Ebay for older components. I got the idea for a set of really nice XTR cranks, but when I started finding them for auction they were going for insanely high amounts. Like $600+ for pristine examples!

Oh, that changes everything. I'm not really familiar enough with modern bike etiquette, but I'm guessing it would work. Maybe better than if it were an old Breezer.

Already have purple cantilevers:

It is getting drum brakes here soon though, so it's a moot discussion. None of those parts would really be appropriate. Still would look cool.

I used to drool over Deaton and Missy's bikes back in the day. That was cutting edge! And the AMP FS bikes from ca 1994. Holy Moly. Here's (http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb213/golf1975/Steel%20frame/P5180077.jpg) a '95.

Yes! Back in the day I wanted an AMP Research bike so much. Of course I couldn't afford it, but I considered buying the fork for my KHS. Never did though.

That's a beauty! What's the deal with the front derailleur cable though? I remember seeing that in pictures back then but never did figure out why there wasn't a cable stop near the seat cluster.

Not sure why Trek ran it that way. There are cable stops on both ends of top tube. Housing from shifter to top tub cable stop. Exposed cable along top tube to cable stop. Cable in housing from top tube cable stop to deraileur. Love the way the bike rides. Time to buy some new rims and learn to lace wheels or buy a new wheel set. Willl probably learn to lace, as it has nice Shimano hubs on it. Suspension was just starting to appear when I bought the bike. Really would love to add a suspension fork to it, as my now 40 something body does not take abuse as well as my 20 something body did.

I aslso remember in 1994 or so Girvin had that big ol' front shock with the huge round tubes that ran from the axle to the handlebar. I remember the first time I saw a guy with one at my local MTB trail - that was like something from the Jetsons, it was so hi-tech looking.

I was contemplating putting a shock on my '93 Marin; I know the Manitou 3 was a popular upgrade for that bike and supposedly the geometry is FS-ready.

It would be incredibly awesome if you could keep it somewhat period correct. But you'd have to find a fork from that era that was still in excellent condition. Man, an old Rock Shox Mag 20 would look great on that bike.

Ah yes, one of my early memories of the mtb world was seeing this add for a ProFlex:

http://mombat.org/proflex752.jpg
I thought it was a great looking bicycle, and I still do. Also, I really miss Panaracer Smoke tires with the tan skin wall. I think that was a great looking tire.

One last note: I still have the first bicycle magazine I ever purchased, an issue of Bicycling from April, 1991. I may have to take some pictures of some of the ads and start a thread.

My great magenta transgression was this:

It's even more like the light magenta in the bike parts shown above. The picture makes it look a lot darker.

I would just like to go on record as saying that my bike is too EXTREME for me. I mean it is metallic green with white handlebar tape.
I go home and pack it in styrene peanuts and wash it with Channel No.5.

I do fear that my EXTREMENESS is tied to my bike. I am not sure what I would do if I was separated from it.
