Commuting - Last week was a bad week

So I've been commuting on this bike since July, and have been slowly fixing it up.

Good tires (38mm Michelin City tires), riser bars, index shifters, blinky lights.

And it had both a Burley alternative hitch, and a TAdams Trail-a-Bike.

Monday morning I went out to ride to work, and it was gone...The first in a wave of stolen bikes in my neighborhood. (I think 10 stolen in the last week).

So I fixed up my old Giant to commute on (thanks to the very awesome guys at Bunnyhop, who did it that afternoon)--but I was displeased.

Displeased? I'd have been p^%$ed the f*^&%$ off! Seriously, I hope they get whoever is doing this. Sometimes it's good to remember, bikes get stolen. It's a fact of being a bicyclist. I had a '67 Raleigh Super Course stolen earlier this year after lending it to a friend who locked it with a cheap cable. Mad for a bit? Sure. Like you, though, I had another bike (actually 3 other bikes) so in reality, it was no biggee. Now you have an excuse to set up another bike! Woohoo!

That sucks :-( Keep an eye on your local craigslist, I hear that's a popular marketplace for stolen goods.

Some cyclists have some considerable time, energy, and money setting up a bike to their liking, it's not always like going down to the local Wally World and picking a bike off their rack.

You left out the money part, depending on the costs to rebuild usually determines the level of the fun factor.

Setting up a bike is fun when:
I have the time
I have the money
I'm in the mood.

It's rather less fun when I just spent the time and money fitting one up to my liking, and now have to do it again, today, so I can get to work tomorrow.

Hmm, where had you been keeping it? I'd never leave a bike outside, and I'd be ultra-pissed if someone broke into my house/garage.

Ya, I get it, bike theft sucks. Like I said, I'd be a bit more than just displeased. It's happened to me. I think the best advice here is to try and keep some money aside in case (or when) it happens to you. If you're prepared, it will be easier to see the roses through the thorns.

Bicycle thiefs are the lowest of the low. I think they get it into their heads that they are stealing a toy, at least here in the U.S., and not someone's means of transportation and they in some sick way think it's not that bad. I don't get it, but they should be treated like grand theft autos as far as I'm concerned.

+1 on the sucky nature of bike theft. It's been a year since my bike was nicked, and it still stings (despite my getting to 'upgrade' because of it).

I'll also +1 on craigslist -- mine showed up almost 4 weeks after the theft. Unfortunately, I let the cops try to make contact, thinking that since I'd done all the leg work, they'd actually do something. Sometimes I'm an optimist. Needless to say, some other lucky person is out there with "my" bike.
