RIM FAILURE AT 13,000 MILES. Going with a Sun Ringle Rhyno Lite for a replacement. We'll see how that holds up.

I'm sorry to be a nub, but what am I looking at here? It looks like the tire got separated from the rim, or maybe the rim cut it?

i'd say it plain wore out. time for a new one.

don't be too disappointed with the longevity of the rim. remember, it is not the distance the rim has traveled that wears a braking surface it is distance traveled under braking, plus a couple of other factors...

What your looking at is where the rim came apart on the braking surface just thru normal wear and tear of daily commuting.

I thought these would last me longer than the little over two years that I've owned them. The front rim is also showing signs of wear thru cupping and ridges forming on the brake surface. Aeroheats aren't as bombproof as I thought.

13,000 miles is pretty good for a rim. I ride year round through all kinds of sloppy weather and I replace rims after 6000-8000 miles or so, depending on brake track wear.

Recent discussion of Aeroheat failures on tandems. Velocity had some manufacturing problems for a while. http://www.bentrideronline.com/messageboard/showthread.php?t=77947

The failures shared by posters all occurred at much lower mileages.
13,000 is a lot of miles for a rim-braked wheel.

Agree. I would be pretty satisfied with getting 13k out of a rear rim. Regular inspection may have warned you that failure was imminent. I probably would have ridden it until it failed anyway. Good post and photo. Thanks for sharing.

I expect my Aeroheat's to last much, much longer.

Of course, I'm running drum brakes...
