Like today for instance when, out of the blue, I see an old, but still serviceable Nishiki that looked to be just about my size propped on a pole along side the street at a house in my neighbourhood.
That is usually a signal that the item is free for the taking, but just to be sure, I rang the bell and spoke to the nice lady, who assured me, that yes, I was free to help myself.
Turns out I've been keeping an eye open for something exactly like this for a planned project, for which I have already amassed most of the major components.
It's going to be a back burner project for now, as I already have 2 winter projects lined up, but I expect it will be ready to roll out come spring in it's new form, which if I stick to the current plan will be a 3 speed with bull horns.
Here's a little look at the bike.

Nice bike and for free. Cant beat that. So did it lose 3lbs after removing lock and cable?

Is that a suntour RD?

Yup. Suntour Honor rear derailleur, Suntour front derailleur and shifters, Sugino crankset, Dia Compe brakes.
Looks like a very low mileage machine. Hardly any visible wear on the drivetrain and tires.

Sweet.

I got a Kabuki Syd from a co-worker who was leaving town. I'm thinking touring bike.

Just for the fun of it, I just hung the lock and cable on the scale. Afraid it only accounted for one pound of the total weight.

Well, the rebuild is complete, and this baby has officially joined the stable. It got the 3 speed Sturmey archer hub and cow horn handlebar. Started out to be a bull horn, but I trimmed the ends off, so I'm calling it a cowhorn.
No opportunity for a real ride today, but a short test ride says this is going to be a keeper.
