Foo - TV on at night time, where do you stand?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I can't sleep at all if the TV is on. I need absolute silence. The AC's humming is as much as I can tolerate.
I know many people are quite the opposite while others are unaffected either way. On which side you stand?

I prefer silence, but there isn't much I can do about neighbors A/C units. I don't hear their TVs. My last house had crickets. That drove me bonkers till I got them sorted out.

When I was a young man I'd sleep with the TV on.. now it only happens if I'm dead tired otherwise it keeps me up.

This was a huge issue with my ex and was probably more icing than cake... was working 7 days a week at 2 jobs and was sometimes double shifting it, doing a great deal of domestic stuff at home while she was not working. She was insistent on having a TV in our bedroom which would not have been bad save for the fact I would be dead tired and trying to sleep and she would come in and turn it on.
I don't consider television to be evil but refuse to own one feeling that our lives are much better for it.
Turned my desktop into a media machine so we can watch dvd's and videos when we want to and my oldest has a TV and DVD player in her room for when she and her sister want to watch things that I don't.

I like dozing off to a nice, old British Documentary.
The TV MUST have a sleep function, though. Set it for 90 minutes and I'm happy.
The worst was my ex that didn't have a sleep button on her TV and would watch DVDs. Main menu audio looping interminably gives me bad dreams. PURE EVIL.
Tonight I'm watching "German Night Fliers", disc 6 in "The Aircraft of the Luftwaffe". It doesn't have a menu because I ripped it to my harddrive sans-menu. Sweet dreams await.
I can't bear the sound of AC myself, I have a loud window AC, so I only fire it up in my bedroom a couple hours before bed then turn it off when I retire. Last summer was so nice, I didn't even bother putting it in the window.

We don't have AC in Seattle, and I think that the sleep timer on the TV is one of the best things since sliced bread. Nothing like the History or Food channel to fall asleep to.

I can't sleep with the TV on. My daughter has trouble falling asleep unless the TV or radio is on.

TV on all night. I'll wake up and drowse off to it. Usually the Military Channel. Usually WWII stuff. Yes!

I've never had a TV in my bedroom. Never realised until recently that most people do. I don't really understand it. I get enough of the idiot box in the living room, why desecrate the bedroom with it as well? Can we not live without a television for more than a few minutes in our daily routines?
In the corner, behind the drapes, with a knife. muahahahahahahaha.

We have one TV and it only gets turned on to play some video games or watch movies. No TV at night.

No TV for me, but my wife likes it. So what usually happens is that it stays on until she's asleep and then I put on BBC World Service.

TV off, PC off, Phone off, No ticking clock... pure silence in my room and it is WONDERFUL!
TV on with sleep timer set ftw. Usually catching up on favorite programs before bed.
I need the Idiot Box to be turned on to make me stop thinking about things. It sort of lulls me into a sleep mode. Sleep timer is a must, otherwise some incredibly loud infomercial inevitably wakes me up.

Nothing worse than waking up to Billy Mays @ 2am!

I dunno how long they'll be around, so if you don't know now don't bother finding out unless you're an electronic device history buff. I haven't had what they call a "TV" for a few years now. I do enjoy entertainment and information video netcasting on hulu.com, freecaster.tv (now extreme.com), local tv newscasts on the net, television companies' sites, twit.tv, etc.

I use a box fan for background noise. It helps drown out neighborhood noises that could wake me up.
I don't own a TV.
TV on all night - sometimes I wake up and watch a little (or think I am) until I fall asleep again.

Maybe if your lucky, you'll get to nod off to WWIII stuff soon.

"TV?" What is this "TV?" We have no such word in our language.
;)
But yeah, generally I would prefer white noise or no noise. Anything with brain-processable content is unacceptable.

Okay, alright, be honest, which one of you is this? (http://www.theonion.com/articles/area-man-constantly-mentioning-he-doesnt-own-a-tel,429/)

Ditto. I can't sleep without some sort of white noise, but TV or music really throws me off.

I once stayed for about a month in a resort hotel, in a room that had climate control that could go down to 50F. I had it at that temp the whole time I was there because I spent most of my time in bed, and I like to breathe cold air. I keep the window next to my bed at home, year round for the same reason. There's snow on the ground right now.

Radio talk shows on all night, and some low level background illumination; without them, the silence is deafening when trying to go to sleep. I like to get up before 4:30 AM, and those distractors help me wake up.
I also need the radio on when trying to concentrate, but the station must be of my choosing (no sports, financial, or gardening shows; TV infomercials, news, and documentary programs are acceptable alternatives for focused concentration, or sleep too).

Oh, I will admit I *own* one; I just don't *watch* it.:p
(Unless you count using it for watching NetFlix rentals).
And the TV is in the den where it belongs, not in the bedroom.
Never had a TV in the bedroom so it is dark, cool, and quiet.

I think you need to sleep in refrigerator, maybe even a freezer. Like this panther:

You might be surprised at some of the things I don't own (or get owned by) :) Add telephones to that list.
But I do have four computers AND A MICROWAVE. For real! :D

Well.... I have a phone. I'm even considering a smartphone... must resist data plan...
On the other hand, I no longer have a computer. My home computer died. I use my work laptop, which is fine, until I lose my job.
