I'm just curious, but it doesn't seem to me that you'd be able to cycle after obesity surgery. You'd have no stomach left for drinking the fluids you'd need for riding more than a few miles.

You don't have to gulp to cycle. i have a water bottle at hand whenever I am awake, and I drink the same way on the bike that I do off, which is frequent sips. It means you have to learn to keep going while drinking, or stop often, but it can be done.
Of course, I do not hurry to cycle, but rather commute and also ride easy to enjoy my longer rides. Maybe you would be right about hammering for long periods...

seems like you'd have to sip really very much continuously, because you're down to 10% of original stomach volume. In hot weather here, you can take in 1000 mL per hour. Sounds rough.

My friend had her stomach stapled last month.
She also died the next day.
In 19 days her children get to wake up and enter their living room to open presents with no Mom.
Is it really worth it?

Oh Heavens, how sad. :cry:
Hard to say, really - if your friend was dying, albeit more slowly, of obesity-related diseases, maybe this was her last opportunity. Many people who get this condition, morbid obesity, have tried everything... and they are too big to really exercise, they way we fit cyclists would attack the problem if we started to get too heavy.
They are in a very, very difficult position.
My friend had her stomach stapled last month.
