Hey my birthdays coming up in 2 weeks and I wanted to ask my parents for my first fixie. I've rode my friends fixies so I'm not that much of a beginner. I'm working with around $500 so I just want to know what's the best thing i can get thats out there. I've been looking at big shot bikes but I have read a lot of negative things about them but from the people who have a big shot they say it's great. Can I get your opinions on that?

I'm pretty sure everyone here will recommend a Mercier Kilo TT. You could also check out used bikes in your area and save some money.

Greetings and salutations. My birthday is in 2 weeks and I would like to ask my parents for my first fixed gear bicycle as their gift to me. I have ridden my friend's fixed gear bicycles, therefore I don't consider myself a beginner fixed-gear cyclist.

My budget for this purchase is around $500. I would like to know which bicycles in particular would be great options within my budgetary constraints. I have considered Big Shot Bikes, but I have read some negative reports regarding their products. On the other hand, actual owners of Big Shot bikes report that they are indeed great bicycles. Bikeforums members, what, may I ask, are your opinions on Big Shot Bikes?

Too late Jaytron, save it for the next guy/gal.

I'd look used, but that might take some time to find a bike that will fit which meets all your requirements. $500 will get you a great bike nowadays.

... and if you do decide on a used bike - take someone who knows about bikes with you to check it out. There are A LOT of people who do not properly maintain their bikes and they may be trying to toss their expense/trouble onto you. Check and re-grease EVERYTHING on the bike that needs be.

Yeah I've been looking into a Kilo TT and a lot of people suggest it but the thing is I don't know where to buy one because they don't have my size (53cm) on bikesdirect. Whats the difference between the regular kilo TT and the limited edition with chrome? If there is any at all.

some of the kilos have sealed hubs and other small differences, but for the most part they're all the same build with different wheels. the expensive ones have sugino cranks and that's really not a huge upgrade. i'd just get the cheap one. it's a great frame but other than that just make sure it fits.

Hahaha. This literally made me laugh out loud. I can almost SEE your disappointment. You're batting something like .967 though, so no worries.

The negative reports. Left hand contains positive reports from owners. Right hand has negative reports from skeptics.
